What is Fluther about?

Hi! I’m new here. How would you describe Fluther’s purpose, at least for you?

Getting your questions answered, sharing your knowledge and information, getting to know more people and wasting your time.

Thanks, seems nice. Any peculiarity or big nono
i should be aware of?

JLeslie's avatar

Asking questions and giving answers.

Big no nos are no personal attacks and we try to have good grammar and spelling, especially in the questions.

Even though fluther is advertised as a Q&A site it is also a fun social outlet in terms of lively discussion, good humor and getting to know others ( as well as one can really know anyone online. ) Yes, personal attacks and poor grammar/spelling will get you modded but otherwise just jump in and have fun. Welcome, it is always nice to have some new blood join the fluther gene pool.

And don’t be upset when you have a question or answer modded off. In case of questions just follow the mods’ instruction. They just want the best for the site.

Also you can’t delete your own questions/answers. The only way to do that is to press the “flag as” button and wait for the mods for the final word.

Hi, welcome to Fluther! It would be a big help for you to read the guidelines before starting to ask and answer questions.

If you find that you like the site, and we hope that you will, it would also be of interest to read this question and the answers.

Welcome to Fluther. It is all that was described above but I will add what it it not.
It is not a place for a ton of vulgar language.
We use try to use proper English most of the time.
Using slang terms or slang acronym’s will often get modded. The occasional LOL will be ok.
As already stated. Personal attacks
And definitely NO SPAM!
But everyone welcomed.

2 years ago we were told in no uncertain terms that Fluther is not a social network site. Please remember that:

Welcome to Fluther!

Welcome to the lagoon!!!

Wasting everyone’s time.

It’s about asking questions to get specific information, sharing tips, airing personal views and opinions, making bad puns, learning lots of things you could probably do by Googling, sharing a personal experience that might help another member, venting, awardng others with lurve (praise) ... and on and on.

olivier5's avatar

Thank you for all this, very useful. I like the ban on personal attacks but my grammar and spelling will be sub-par i’m afraid. My excuse is that I’m a non-native speaker.

JLeslie's avatar

If English isn’t your primary language we are understanding of that. When you write questions the mods might ask you to fix a mistake, but they will help you with it. For answers they are more lenient.

Stick around. It’s fun here. We have a lot of very knowledgable helpful participants.

Where do you live? Where are you from?

olivier5's avatar

Hi Leslie. I’m from France and live in Rome, Italy.

Are most Fluther members from North America?

Re. language, i plan to read more and write less anyway.

cookieman's avatar

@olivier5: No worries about your grammar. Your writing is better than most. Glad to have you here.

@olivier5 The majority of us regulars are from the USA. Next in attendance probably is Canada, but we have quite a few Europeans. I can’t think of anyone else from France, which means you absolutely must stay! I can think of one person from Italy. We have a few from Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, and various parts of Asia from Vietnam, India, Israel, and others pop in now and then. Add a few from Australia and a couple Latin Americans too.

olivier5's avatar

Nice. That’s better diversity than is typical of these things. Not that I dislike any particular origin but cultural diversity is important to me.

Who’s the Italian regular, may I ask?

Mimishu1995's avatar

@olivier5 the mods aren’t as hard on grammar than on personal attack. And they are willing to send your question back with detailed instruction on how to correct things so don’t worry. Beside, you won’t get banned for bad grammar, only get your posts modded.

Not to mention I’m fond of French and Italian culture too :)

I think I know about the Italian user @JLeslie is talking about, but I don’t think they are active here.

And try to guess my origin :D You’ll be surprised!

JLeslie's avatar

I think Thorninmud is Italian? I might be mistaken. Italian or Spanish I think? Now, I’m questioning my memory.

Edit: here is a Q asking where people live, or where they are from. If you search you will find more. Every so often someone asks a Q to find out who’s here.

olivier5's avatar

Ad hominem SHOULD be banned. I’m very happy that’s the case here. The board I was posting on before coming here was into a whirl of negativity, fuelled by the US primaries and other things.

Re. your origins, the only thing I can think of is that the name “Mimishu” sounds Japanese.

JLeslie's avatar

Mimishu is from Vietnam I think.

@olivier5 Tell us a little about you. Are you in school, work, stay home, interests, age, anything you want to share.

We have some heated political discussions here, but really good in my opinion. I learn a lot. We have some fabulously knowledgable people here for everything from science to baking a cake.

France has been in the news a lot in our media, so it will be nice to get a reality check from someone who lives there. I think the US news is slanted a little (surprise). The person I work for does a lot of reporting from France. Well, her staff does, she lives in Germany.

If you stay a while, you’ll become familiar with the various personalities on here. Some are fun, some are smart, some are prissy, some like to argue, some are negative, some are funny, some may annoy you and some you may come to think of as friends and may get to know better.

Some of us keep in touch on FB, too.

olivier5's avatar

I’m male, married with 2 kids, working.

Leslie: France has been in the news a lot in our media, so it will be nice to get a reality check from someone who lives there. I think the US news is slanted a little (surprise).

O5: The news in the US are shackled by ads, fears of litigation, and owned by the super-rich. Given these odds, there’re still some good journalists doing what they can.

I don’t live in France but in Italy though. I can still comment or help explain certain gallic oddities such as strikes, universal health care, or newspapers owned by their journalists.

JLeslie's avatar

Oh right. You live in Italy. I love Italy. I haven’t been to France, but my family loves it there. I think I’m the only one who hasn’t been.

You can still give a French perspective, whether you agree with people in France or Italy or not, you will know better how people think in those countries and how the system functions. I’m interested in all of that.

I grew up with my family speaking ill of the “French” because of WWII, and accusing them of being antisemitic (the abstract them, not every individual) and at the same time they loved France, the food, the scenery, the art, the people, everything, and never had trouble getting around or getting along in France. Many Americans complain the French aren’t helpful to Americans, my family has never said any such thing. Always a very good experience.

Meanwhile, Italy is so fabulous.

My friend (who I work for) her media company is www.ara-network.com. They do a lot of reporting from Europe and all parts of Asia. The Americas, Africa, and Australia too, but her inside track in EurAsia I find most interesting. I’m not trying to promote her website, feel free to disregard. We don’t use Fluther to promote business so to speak, or solicit, but we do share links to give supportive data during a conversation or help somebody.

Mimishu1995's avatar

@olivier5 well at least you add another culture to the tidepool. With so many Americans here it’s nice to listen to another view from yet another culture.

And this site is great to improve your English too. I’d say I horn my English right here.

Oh, and drop at the chatroom some time for a little socializing too.

olivier5's avatar

@Mimishu1995: So you’re Vietnamese?
