Can you help me troubleshoot my Epson printer?

Asked by Hawaii_Jake (37749points) June 25th, 2016

I have an Epson xp-420 printer. Simple and cheap.

I was able to print for months, and now suddenly it has lost its connection to my WiFi.

I have restarted my router. I have restarted the printer. I have reset the printer to default settings. It will not connect to the WiFi. It can detect the WiFi, but it will not connect. I’m certain I’m putting in the correct WiFi password.

I have searched online, but I have not been able to find any help.

Ideas?

If this does not work, can you recommend a replacement printer I can buy that will not drop the WiFi connection?

I’m using a Dell PC running Windows 10. No issues with the computer.

Looking at the manual, I see two things I would try: resetting to defaults, and printing a network report.

From the manual :

p. 219
If you have a problem with settings on the product control panel, you can reset them to their factory
defaults. You can choose which settings to reset or reset them all.
1. Press the home button, if necessary.
2. Press the left or right arrow button to select Setup and press the OK button.
3. Press the up or down arrow button to select Restore Default Settings and press the OK button.
4. Press the up or down arrow button to select one of these options and press the OK button:
• Network Settings: Resets all network settings.
• All except Network Settings: Resets all control panel settings, except for network settings.
• All Settings: Resets all control panel settings.
You see a confirmation screen.
5. Press the OK button to reset the selected settings.

p. 40
You can print a network status sheet to help you determine the causes of any problems you may have
using your product on a network.
1. Press the home button, if necessary.
2. Press the left or right arrow button to select Setup and press the OK button.
3. Press the up or down arrow button to select Network Settings and press the OK button.
You see this screen:
4. Press the arrow buttons to select Network Status and press the OK button.
You see this screen:
5. Press the left or right arrow buttons to display the Network Status screen.
6. Press the up or down arrow buttons to select Print Status Sheet and press the OK button.
7. Press the start button to print the network status sheet.
(Press the stop button if you want to cancel the operation.)
Examine the settings shown on the network status sheet to diagnose any problems you have.

Thank you. I have reset it to factory settings. That did not make any difference.

I will try the other idea.

I was hoping to find a utility for setting up the Wifi while the printer is connected with a USB cable, but I didn’t find anything like that in the manual or the downloads page.

There’s a Web Config Utility (manual p. 42) but it looks like that works if the printer is already connected to the wifi network, not via USB.

This is what I just went through with my HP printers. There was an apparent problem with my computer not the printer. The computer could not see/connect to printer.
1) I went to the printer website and downloaded the drivers again.
2) I shut down everything, cable modem, WiFi router, computer, printer.
3) Ten minutes later I plug the cable modem in to wall for electricity and when all lights are on and flashing, turn on WiFi router wait 2 minutes, turn computer back on and finally turn printer on.
It was like night and day.

Triple check your WiFi password is correct.
I keep my WiFi password in the spiral ring notebook (for my wife) and also on a text file in my “Documents” on the computer as a “Word” document.

Is there a chance of running a cat-5/6 cable between the hub on your WiFi router to the printer?
... at least for a test, make sure the rest of the printer is functional.

Triple check your WiFi password is correct

Upper case and lower case is common cause for error. But that wouldn’t explain why the printer stopped working.

But that gives me the idea of changing the WIFI password on the router and maybe the network name, too. If changing it on all your other devices is acceptable.

Perhaps I was unclear in the information in the OP. No, I wasn’t.

I have done exactly as written in the OP. I have now done those steps again. I have uninstalled the drivers from my computer. Nothing works.

The printer will not connect to my WiFi.

The printer has no ports for wires.

I’m done.

Thanks.

Is it WiFi only, I have Bluetooth connectivity too. Is that an option?

The manual and the Epson site say the printer has a USB port for wired printing (picture).

USB or Wifi.

No Bluetooth.

I have no clue what just happened. I used the printer’s small screen to jump through some deletions and change some things. I then put the exact same password in again, and it connected.

It is now printing again.

Thank you.

I have no clue how that happened.

The “ether” just cleared and the the words showed up on the paper.

That is great news.

My Epson XP-400 frequently does not respond to printings from my PC or takes several minutes before printing. Often restarting the wifi, the PC and the printer resolved the problem. Lately, clicking on the hidden printer icon has proved more successful.
