Is it true that 90% of Muslims are homophobic and sexist?
Unfortunately this is a claim I have been seeing a lot of lately. I know that some of you aren’t too fond of the religious based questions, so sorry if this post is not your cup of tea.
Anyway something I try to promote is equality for all human beings. I am struggling a bit when it comes to Muslims and Islam. It almost seems as if there is a somewhat consistent (or incomplete) levels of knowledge and information on both sides of this issue.
On one hand, I want to point out that not all Muslims are terrorists or associated with ISIS or other terrorist groups. On the other hand I do see homophobia and sexism from Muslims. This homophobia is not necessarily violent. Its more on the same level as a conservative Christian of the 1950s.
Then again I do feel that there is a level of islamaphobia going on at the same time. I do see Muslims being generalised right off the bat. Before we even know the specific details on the attack in Orlando, there were comments all across the web speculating that it was probably a Muslim who did it.
And yet many Islamic nations have policies under sharia law that calls for the death of homosexuals or at the very least their imprisonment. There are similar harsh laws for women who commit fornication.
I guess what I’m asking here is, what argument promotes the reality and balance of what is really occurring here? Or how you’d you explain the reality of things to an islamaphobe?

It does seem to be very against their religion, and not just the extreme ones.
But then a lot of other religions seem homophobic as well.
I wouldn’t say 90%, but the vast majority of Muslims that live in countries in which sharia law is enforced and fully followed were probably raised to be of such mindset.
But as @SQUEEKY2 said, there are plenty of religions that are homophobic, as well as sexist.
About as true as 17.4 million Leave voters (Brexit) being racist, ignorant, stupid, or xenophobic.
Which is to say, not in the least bit true despite allegations & assumptions from undeducated morons.
I dunno. I haven’t met 90% of Muslims. Though the ones I have met have been pretty chill.
Consider the source. Consider the agenda. Remember that “Muslim” does not mean “practicing Muslim”. Remember that no-one has actually spoken to ninety percent of Muslims, much less asked them about their views in a setting which would allow them to speak freely. Remember that the worst thing we can do in our work against terrorism is to convince more Muslims that they’re alone out there, and we won’t do anything to help. Remember that hate and violence are the cause of terrorism, not the cure.
And then, think.
@longgone You make a very good point there. Thank you for your answer
Your question is two fold and confusing by the fact that you insert Islamaphobia into your question. I would like to see you pick one or the other and not conflate the two. Either debate muslims against gays or the world against Islamaphobes….just pick one. Islam AFAICAT has little to no tolerance for the gay life style and seem to have no issue with extinguishing those that profess to break tradition. Islamaphobia is a much murkier area that has non muslims and devote muslims alike who are pushing back against the Islamic extremist views that are responsible for setting gays on fire and throwing them off rooftops.
@Cruiser Point taken. However what I’m getting at, is that there is misinformation on both sides of the coin.
@NerdyKeith And not to discount what you are asking but both sides are significantly charged to be worthy of discussion on their own merits. Even a question on misinformation is worthy on its own… your OP was specific about Muslims are homophobic and sexist? and to throw the other 2 into the mix only dilutes the conversation. I appreciate you asking this none the less…step in the right direction.
I don’t know about being homophobic (with the possible exception of the guy who shot up the nightclub recently) but sexist ? I do believe they’re sexist. I’ve seen a couple interviews from the women , though, and they were smiling and saying they work and go to school. That was encouraging.
Sweeping generalisations tend never to really reflect the truth.
Ummm….quite curious, we want thing used for their intended purpose, but when it comes to anyone supporting or advocating humans living within their biological dispensation upon birth, and not going with the notion ”nature” got it wrong, then it is homophobic, however the other side doesn’t have the right to call it debased, wrong, or whatever. So the fist part of Muslims being homophobic is a non-starter, because the term in itself is arbitrary depending on the whim of some who use it. The same would go with sexist if you get down to it, both sexes have their function, just because one doesn’t have the same function of the other, the one who perceive that they are receiving the worse end of the functionality will feel put down or maligned. That would be like the nail feeling maligned by the hammer because the hammer is doing the pounding, the nail would be rather useless without the hammer. Are there people who misuse their function or purposed roles, sure, but that happens with people who are not Muslim as well.
The whole world is sexist. That is because there are two sexes. Please get with the program.
I have heard a lot of stories about Muslims, but I don’t actually know anything except my personal impressions of people I have met. I don’t want to meet any of them again.
