What's the best way to keep the shape of a ball cap when you launder it?

Asked by ibstubro (18804points) July 1st, 2016

I particularly hate those creases the ball caps get in the very front, if there is embroidery?

Is it the washing or the drying that’s most important?
I’m wondering if stretching the ball cap over a styrofoam wig stand while the cap dries would keep the shape?

Would something like this help?

I would hand wash it rather than throwing it in to the machine. I think that would keep it in good shape.

I don’t know, @canidmajor.
I have something similar that I’ve not tried.
When I tried to fit the ball cap into it, I didn’t see where it was going to work, so I came to the computer and asked the question, instead of doing a load of laundry.
Or cleaning the house, pulling weeds, getting dressed…

That’s a thought, @Mariah. I’ve never trusted hand washing, though. It’s just something we never did when I was growing up. How do you know when it’s clean and rinsed?

Some of my clothes are handwash-only. I use detergent and rinse with cool water in the bathroom sink. It gets pretty foamy, and then I just continue to rinse until the foam is gone. Clothes always smell and feel fine after that!

I wash them in the dishwasher.

My brother is a regular ballcap wearer, and he uses one of those things @canidmajor showed you. His caps always look pristine.

The only “hand wash only ” clothes I’ve ever owned, @Mariah, I washed in the machine with the rest of my clothes. Sink or swim.
And I should have mentioned that I have 2 caps that I got 2nd hand that are really dirty.
Next time I need to wash one of my own caps, I’ll try handwashing.

Seems like I need something to keep the shape of the hat while it dries, @janbb?

Although my head is not the size of a volleyball, @Dutchess_III. Thankyouverymuch!

AH HA! I have heard of that, @YARNLADY, now that you mention it! Tell me more. Describe what _you do.

Not to be an ass, @marinelife, but does your brother wear caps that are embroidered on the crown? The backing on the embroidery seems to be the problem for me. If a panel has backing, it seems to want to pucker and crease.

Specifically, this is the product I have to wash the cap

I usually just set it in on the wires that stick up along with the dishes. That helps them keep their shape.

OK, set it over the head of a pin @ibstubro. Ha ha ha ha!! Get it? Get it? ;)~

@ibstubro Yes, he has embroidered letters and team logos etc.
