What is your favorite brand of coffee?

Asked by Cruiser (40454points) July 1st, 2016

For the last couple years I have drank so very little coffee mainly because I didn’t enjoy the flavor anymore. It is a shame because I really enjoy a cuppa coffee sitting out on the deck on the weekends. I went to a Mother’s day brunch at a golf club restaurant and had a cup of the BEST coffee ever and was one I had never heard of before…Douwe-Egberts Excellent. To say it was the most amazing cup of coffee is an understatement. Looking to see what my Jelly friends drink to see what I may be missing out on.

I know that how you brew your coffee matters a lot too so care to share what your secrets are for a yummy cuppa Joe and even your favorite cup to drink from. This Q is all about coffee.

Nothing exciting about my coffee, so sorry about that. I have Nescafe Alta Rica. I will occasionally have Nescafe Dolce Gusto Pods.

I do really really enjoy a Costa Latte though.

Dunkin Donuts brand . Or, Starbucks Instant which is almost as good.

@Aster My wife is a Duncan store bought coffee fan. It replicates the Donut shop coffee flavor faithfully.

I usually buy Eight O’Clock Coffee. It’s the coffee I grew up with and is often on sale.

I like to support small roasting businesses when I have the opportunity, too. I love good Kona coffee.

My daily coffee is made in a French press.

Cruiser's avatar

@Seek I forgot about the French press. I have one hiding in a cabinet somewhere and does make a great tasting cup!

@Cruiser I get the DD brand at the local chain grocery.

Cruiser's avatar

@Aster That is where my wife picks it up too! It’s cheaper there than buying it at the donut chain stores.

I just buy the Folgers breakfast blend and I like it just fine. I do not like the flavored creamers. I just use a little sugar or honey and a bit of 1% milk or powdered, regular flavor, creamer.
I also like the half caff. blend, as I enjoy drinking 4 or so cups the first few hours of the morning. After that, no more caff. for me.

With enough cream and sugar, they all taste about the same to me. Lately I’ve been buying Dunkin Donuts K pods, Not great but good enough for my unsophisticated coffee taste.

Whatever is on sale at the grocery store, though I usually get something in a bag, but I get Folger ½ and ½ fairly often. If not I have to mix my own half calf/have decaf. I used to be pretty fussy about my coffee but I don’t care so much anymore. Coffee is just a caffeine delivery system to me now. I mix it half and half so I can drink more of it without getting jittery. I realize that my coffee buying and drinking habit may not make much sense. I may not care as much about the quality as I used to but I still like to drink a lot of it.

I’m always happy when the good stuff goes on sale though, like this week. Starbuck’s, normally $9.99 for a 12oz bag was on sale $5.99 so I stocked up.

My favorite is from a tiny roaster, Alchemy Coffee in Wilmette. Really the best coffee I know in Chicagoland. The beans are $14/lb and up, which puts it in the gifts & special occasions part of my budget.

For the daily grind, I buy a variety of beans from Trader Joes. The best is organic Sumatra at $7.99/13 oz. Their $4.99 house blend is good.

I’m OK with the store brands. If I see Folgers for $6.99/32 oz I can’t pass that up.

I brew make a weaker brew with the cheaper coffees, I think they taste much, much better that way.

At home, Keurig coffee maker with K-cups from Costco – either Newman’s Organic Medium Roast or Kirkland Pacific Bold (Costco generic is Kirkland brand).

At work, drip coffee maker with whatever coffee is on sale. I stock up.

I put 2% milk and artificial sweetener in it.

When I’m out, I either get a cup at McD’s (it’s Newman’s Own for a dollar, any size – you can’t beat it). I’ll also get DD or sometimes coffee from a local place that also makes great homemade bagels.

French Press makes the best coffee! I have a few French Presses, but the Keurig is so convenient in the morning. The reason why French Press makes the best is that there’s no paper filter, so the oils in the grinds go right into the coffee, giving it full body. Also, you are using boiling water so you can make it as hot as you like (and I like it hot!).

I’m afraid that as a long-time Seattleite, my palate was permanently burnt at Starbucks. I prefer the dark roasts. My favorite everyday coffee is Cafe Verona. Sometimes for a change, I enjoy Sumatra.

Not a coffee fan..need a hot cup of tea to get me going.

I hate Starbucks. Expensive and nasty tasting.

I drank Gevalia for years. Then, when I moved to the States, I had to switch to French Roast with a French press—it was the closest thing to Gevalia. Now it’s a draw between Bustelo and Pilon (black label). Dark, rich, aromatic and Cubano.

Thanks for all the great suggestions and comments. @Rarebear I scoped out the White Horse website and love their mission statement and will have to try both the coffee and tea. @Call_Me_Jay I lived outside of Wilmette for years (now in west suburbs) and you piqued my interest in Alchemy Coffee as a local roaster would be ideal. @jca Costco truly does have quality Coffee and when I was a member there I remember how much I loved their coffees.

I will not tolerate anything called “dark roast”. Other than that I use whatever coffee is cheapest. I used to pay a bundle for gourmet coffee from Gevalia, but then they sent instructions on how to act like you know something when tasting coffee. One item was not to taste more than four varieties at a time because after the fourth sip you can’t tell the difference any more. So I said “If I can’t tell the difference, I decline to pay the difference.” That was not entirely true: Kona is noticeably better than other varieties because it is much lower in acid. Now I use a brewing method that gives coffee every bit as good as Kona from anything the Dollar Store happens to have.

¾ cup grounds
4 cups filtered water

Combine and stir once or twice. Let sit at room temperature 24 hours. Filter and discard the grounds. Refrigerate the liquid. When you are ready, mix one part of the liquid with three parts water and nuke it.

Some people let the mixture sit in the refrigerator, but I prefer room temperature.

^ microwaved stale coffee is probably the most depressing three words I could string together.

My heart is breaking.

jca's avatar

I’m with @Seek.

Call_Me_Jay's avatar

Cold-brewed coffee is not “stale” coffee. It’s notably less acidic than “normal” coffee and a lot of people prefer it.

Note: I am not talking about iced coffee. Cold brew gives you a concentrate that can be diluted for either hot or iced coffee.

Seek's avatar

Cold brewed and then microwaved, and allowed to cool to room temperature. shudder

If you’re going to cold brew at least drink it cold.
