Movie lovers, will you join me in wishing Olivia de Havilland happy 100th birthday?

Asked by Pachy (18610points) July 1st, 2016

You have to be REAL movie lover to know who Olivia de Havilland is. She played Melanie Hamilton in “Gone With the Wind” and is that 1939 classic film’s last surviving cast member. Ms. De Havilland made countless other films, none better than “Suspicion” with Cary Grant. OH WAIT!—that was Olivia’s equally talented and famous sister Joan Fontaine, who passed away just three years ago.

Olivia de Havilland turned 100 years young today, and I say she deserves a Happy Birthday wishes from all jellies who (1) love movies, and (2) are old enough to know who she is.

Nooooo! Really? 100!

Makes me want to watch GWTW again, but then again, maybe not. haha

I just read that Olivia wrote, to her sister Joan, as a 9 year old. ” I bequeath all my beauty to my younger sister Joan, since .: she has none.” haha

I do, and I am, and I do. Happy Major Birthday, ma’am!

Don’t forget The Heiress. And the 1938 Adventures of Robin Hood, with Errol Flynn!

Oh yes, @Jeruba, she was breathelessly beautiful in Robin Hood. So was Errol. ;-)

And so was Basil Rathbone.

“Breathlessly beautiful”—two words I never expected to see in the same sentence as the name Basil Rathbone… but you’re right.

I missed this post @Pachy. Gone With The Wind is rolling at this very minute.

She was gorgeous in GWTW and, as far as I’m concerned, her acting nearly stole the spotlight from Ms. Leigh. All she needed was just a few more lines. The level-headed sister. I loved her in the Santa Fe Trail and Robin Hood. I keep all three films on an external harddrive. I hope she is happy.

Happy Birthday, Ms. de Havilland!

In her honor, I’ve just watched the first half of GWTW again on my old DVD. She has survived her three costars by a very long time: Leslie Howard died in 1943, Clark Gable in 1960, and Vivien Leigh in 1967. Think of that!—she’s outlived the last of them by 49 years.

I always thought it sounded like she was named after an airplane.

Does anyone know what the feud with her sister, Joan Fontaine was all about? It was a big topic of discussion at the poker game Saturday.

stanleybmanly's avatar

Thank you. That was enlightening. I suppose the price of fame is to become the subject of juicy gossip.

Dutchess_III's avatar

@SmartAZ, that’s because Olivia de Havilland’s cousin, Geoffrey de Havilland, invented de Havilland airplanes

“Actress Olivia de Havilland is de Havilland’s cousin; his father, Charles, and her father, Walter, were half-brothers…”

It would be more proper to say the airplane was named after her family, not that she was named after the plane.

@stanleybmanly, I haven’t researched it, but I suspect it was a potent combination of sibling rivalry and professional jealousy.

Her name has a lovely poetic meter to it. As does “happy birthday to you!”
