Yes. All Internet and social media activity is a threat to security.
Google maps snags your location too.
And Niantic (who made the game) is backed by Google. So google could probably tie all that shit together anyway.
But yes, the game was really overreaching in its requesting permissions. There is no reason it should have access to all your texts and email and photos.
It could be malice or incompetence. I have done similar things where I asked for it all to make sure it worked and then paired it back to what I actually needed. But I am also a dude in his mom’s backyard and they had 30 million of funding…
It is potentially a threat, yeah, but anything technological these days is. The permissions are so you can share in-game content easily with other people. I don’t necessarily like them, but I’m also not very worried about it. If I have a reason to be, or if something happens, I’ll just uninstall it. But for now, I like playing with my niece since it makes me smile to see how excited she gets about finding rare Pokémon. Plus, it sends us on little adventures. For now, the pros outweigh the cons.
Hey, kids want more than anything to be noticed. Careful what you ask for.
Meh. If the NSA or Google or whoever has the time and inclination to watch me walk circles from the library to the feed store collecting PokeStops, they’re welcome to.
If anybody’s going to commit some crimes, leave your phone at home. Also, leave your E-Z Pass home, too.
