Why aren't pick up trucks required to have license plates on the back of the trucks in Missouri?

Asked by Dutchess_III (47126points) July 26th, 2016

Hubs pointed that out to me yesterday and I’ll be darned if it’s not true! Cars and SUVs and mini vans have to have back plates but not pick ups. They only have them on the front. I would hate to be a cop in Missouri.

Isn’t that the “Show Me” State? Maybe law enforcement just doesn’t want to know what the rednecks are up to. Too much hassle.

Isn’t that a state-by-state requirement? Usually in Canada, we just think that people are from the US if their vehicles don’‘t have back plates.

Espiritus_Corvus's avatar

They have rear plates. The plates are behind those big, vinyl testicles hanging from the trailer hitch.

It’s awkward here in Missouri.

Up until just a few years ago it was legal to shoot a Mormon on sight.

I can’t explain the pickup truck plates.

Here is the answer in legalese.

Here is the answer written in a way that the rest of us can read.

I can sort of see the logic in that, based on @tedibear ‘s links.

What surprises me is how may states require a FRONT plate. My state, Georgia, only requires a rear plate, which makes sense. But 35 states require both front and back. I don’t see the benefit of that.

@Espiritus_Corvus

Those are known as truckticles.

@elbanditoroso

Benefit?

Why should the state make bank on only one plate when they can make double on two?

It’s great to be back in GA, without the cop laser gun reflecting, radiator airflow restricting front plate.

Screw you New York.

@elbanditoroso: So the vehicle can be identified by police or others if only being viewed from the front.

Dutchess_III's avatar

@Espiritus_Corvus no they don’t have them

elbanditoroso's avatar

@jca – somehow our georgia police officers have been managing to arrest people without front plates for the last 50 years…

Cost.
Missouri is cheap, and it costs ½ again as much to make duplicate plates.
The prisoners make the plates.
Why would anyone pay 12½ cents more for a second plate??

Dutchess_III's avatar

People pay for their own plates. It’s called “property tax.” If a person wants a back plate for their truck they have to pay extra for it.
Also, it’s only the trucks who aren’t required to have it. Cars are required to have a back plate.
Pretty sure prisoners haven’t made tags since the 20’s, too. After that the shit got automated. But I’ll check

Only pick up trucks in Missouri aren’t required to have a back plate. @tedibear explained it here.
