Would aliens have martial arts?

Asked by MrGrimm888 (19541points) July 27th, 2016

Humans aren’t particularly good at hurting each other when unarmed. No claws, or anything to use as a weapon.

For thousands of years we’ve specialized and advanced ways of using our bodies natural strengths and weaknesses to defend or attack each other.

Hypothetically, if there are aliens that are ‘big brain’ fragile body types, like us, would they have tried to master ‘hand to hand’ combat?

They should, as Captain Kirk demonstrated by defeating them through fisticuffs despite their technological superiority on many, many occasions.

Depends on if they meet us here or on their own planet.

It might just be “martial crafts”.

It would depend on if they’re a warlike people or not.
Martial arts are basically a refinement of personal self defense tactics.

Aliens might have gone the route of camouflage.
They might also have developed from a pack mentality, where the individual basically doesn’t exist.

Pffft! martial arts, don’t you know anything.
THIS is how they would defend themselves.

I doubt it, they may have far advanced ways of defending themselves and scoff at our ways.

I doubt you could block our space laser with your fists.

Unlikely that aliens would have martial arts.

For one thing, who is to say that aliens have bodies like ours with appendages like ours?

Second, aliens would – with their technologies and mental acuities, likely have moved past physical sports and much more likely be mentally advanced from us. Their version of entertainment would be more like 6-dimensional Scrabble,

If they have a tendency to kill one another, like humans, then yes. It is always handy in a combat situation to kill as quickly as possible.

In the modern human world, martial arts have evolved into a method of teaching discipline and physical fitness rather than strictly self defense.
I don’t see the need for discipline and physical fitness disappearing unless we’re all evolving into that Dark Shadows Dude.

Well. The question doesn’t allude to the martial arts might have been part of their past… And maybe they don’t need it anymore.
