Will the Rio Olympic Games mark the start of this expensive event's decline?

Shamelessly stolen.
I had been trying to form the question in a straightforward way, when, lo and behold, it appeared before me!

Will the Rio Olympic Games mark the start of this expensive event’s decline?

I certainly hope so

Hopefully, but I doubt it. There will be no shortage of cities and countries clamoring to put themselves in debt for decades to be able to place this gilded turd on their mantle. Come August 22 the city of Rio will be stuck with a bunch of shiny new sports venues they have no use for, the multinational corporations will be counting their money, the tax payers will have a huge debt to pay off, the bourgeoisie will be nursing their hangovers and the inhabitants of the favelas will be as poor and ignored as ever.

I think it’s mainly totalitarian countries that want the Olympics any more.
Fuck the peons.
Put the shine on Putin.

Hmmm. If Trump is elected, the US is sure to bid to host an Olympics.

@ibstubro

Are Atlanta (1996), Sydney (2000), Salt Lake City (2002), Vancouver (2010) and London (2012) in totalitarian countries? (Not to mention that the US (via Chicago) did bid on the games that are about to start in Rio.)

Countries and cities are catching on, and those in the best positions to take the financial hit are increasingly backing away from the scam. I feel badly for the athletes exploited in the contests, and hope they still manage to compete in whatever emerges from the corrupt ruins.

Kinda funny to think that not that long ago Lake Placid, NY won the right to host the Olympic games simply by being the only city to submit a bid for them.

(Well, not strictly true. Vancouver did submit a bid but then withdrew it.)

I am hoping that at some point people will wise up and realize it is not about “The Games”. It is about the athletes and their prowess and that spending obscene amounts of cash in order to boost the ego of those who put on the show, not those who participate, is a waste of time and resources that could either be better applied elsewhere or at the very least not wasted on the superficial.
