Should Star Trek be granted the status of religion if requested?
There are certainly equivalent attributes.
There is a Prophet, Gene Roddenberry.
There are ‘holy’ texts/gospels, in the form of the various Star Trek series and movies, and if you want, the countless books.
There are moral teachings derived from those stories.
There are religious figures in the form of the various characters in those stories.
There are certain rituals, like dressing up in costumes, acting like the characters, and the various salutes (“Live long and prosper”, “Qapla”)
There are even religious symbols like the Starfleet communicator, the Federation logo, or the emblem of the Klingon Empire.
All these things surely qualify Star Trek to be seen as a religion.
On the other hand:
Do you think that the value of Star Trek would be diminished by becoming/being seen as a religion?

YES! Even as a fantasy, it is far more consistent than the bulk of the other “faiths”. But I’m trying to figure out exactly who or what the congregants “worship”.

But isn’t that the definition of All religions?

Sure. I can’t think of any reason it shouldn’t. But I would be mad if someone got a day off from work for Kirk Day or something, and I didn’t.
In the US, a request to the government isn’t required unless one wants the tax breaks that come with being a religion. So, the request is for a tax classification. One can preach anything they wish and have as many followers as they wish without the tax break.
If Scientology can be a “legitimate” religion in the U.S. with all the same tax breaks as the Catholic Church—even after the wife of the founder and a couple of her devotees were convicted of breaking into the FBI’s Washngton offices—then I suppose Trekkies and Spaggetti Monster people can do the same as long as they meet IRS criteria.
Surely Star Trek transcends religion?
Yes. The Canadian military recognizes Jedi as a religion. So Star Trek can’t be very far away. Edit I can’t find a link sorry.
Seems as valid as all the other fictions worshiped by people.
So is J.J. Abrams the anti-prophet?
I think there are multiple religions and/or sects involved. They should all be allowed if someone makes a suitably dramatic performance to demonstrate their devotion.
I could get behind that.
What should be the dominant symbol? The Chevron or the IDIC?
I got kicked out of Starfleet Officer training. I’m not sure I’m much of a follower.
