Do you have CPR skills and are you confident that you can use them correctly?

Asked by ZEPHYRA (21750points) August 2nd, 2016

Have you ever needed these skills or are you planning on getting training soon? Do you think you could use them or would you be paralysed by panic?

I was trained 20 years ago. I kind of remember readin that the technique is different today.

But I think I would give it a try if faced with the need.

It has been a long time since I was certified, too. But I do remember how to do it, and even the rhythm:

Stayin alive
stayin alive
Ah ah
ah ah
staying alive

I get trained every couple of years, I know the technique well but the one time I had to use it I could not save the persons life. I promise you are not prepared for how tiring giving CPR for the better part of an hour can be. Even with help.

I am certified and get new training when I have to. Am I confident? No. Have I ever had to use it? No, thankfully. It’s changed over the years, and I’m sure it’s very tough and stressful, emotionally and physically.

I get training every 2 years through the Red Cross. I’d be nervous for sure because it’s a life/death situation, but the class for healthcare workers was really good and taught more than just skills, like how to manage the situation with other people at the scene. The real big thing they emphasized to us is getting the blood circulating as quickly as possible because if it remains still for too long it will clot and the victim is fucked.

They were saying that there’s a good chance you personally won’t revive the victim, but by keeping O2 going and the blood moving you’re buying time and preventing brain damage for when the paramedics arrive with better resources.

I’m disappointed that CPR isn’t a requirement to graduate High School. It’s not that hard to learn and is a really positive social good to have as many people trained as possible.

ACLS here. In the ER and during disasters, I’ve used this training often. Confident. But I won’t be re-certifying unless an attractive off-shore employment opportunity arises, which is unlikely.

Yes and yes. Also happy to use (and have used) those nifty AED machines you see in public places.

Yes, I am certified in CPR as well as other first responder techniques. I took a class in my last year of college. I think the certification expires soon though.

No, I’m not confident, as I’ve never done it on a real person, and CPR has a very low success rate even when done correctly anyway. I hope I never have to do it on anybody, but if I do, at least I can say that I tried my best and did everything I could to help, including getting certified in the first place.

I am confident that I could perform it, although it would be “old school”,. since my certifications expired back in the eighties. I have been trained to perform emergency defibrillation using the AED.

@Mariah outside of hospital the success rate depends on how quickly first responders respond. For example on the gaming floors of Las Vegas casinos the success rate for CPR is between 70% and 90% but that’s because everyone is being watched constantly by cctv so the help is on the way quickly and all the security guards carry AED’s so people get shocked quickly. Makes a big difference.

I have a canine First Aid certificate but not a human one. If your dog is in trouble I can probably help but if you’re in trouble that would be more of a challenge!!
