What to do with this French movie?

Asked by Mimishu1995 (23800points) August 3rd, 2016

I happened to download a rare French movie. I don’t know anything about spoken French and only a little about written French. I did a search for a subtitle but there was no result, probably because the movie is so rare. I really want to watch it but I have no mean to understand the language. Any suggestion?

Which movie is it? Mimi, I’m rather surprised. Aren’t your parents fluent in French, and if so, did they actually neglect to impart the language to you?

Come to think of it, the French were booted out of your country better than 60 years ago. I’ve turned into my grandfather.

@stanleybmanly This is the movie. I just happened to come accross it while browsing for something else. And my parents were born after the French had left, and their French is as good as mine. They are more versed in Russian.

Seems like the only thing to do is find someone who speaks French and can translate it while you watch it together. And, the need to be aware of late 1950’s Parisian crime slang.

I looked for it on IMDB , not a lot to go on, but sounds like a beautiful movie. Try watching it as is and see how much you pick up from it. You might be opening up a whole new world for yourself.

The choices are the same as with any other movie in the world, in whatever language it’s presented: Watch or Don’t Watch.

You have the rest of your life to decide. Hopefully, there’s no rush, then.

There are at least two other options, if they are available for this movie. One is to purchase it in DVD format that offers subtitles in a language that you can read. The other is to find a website that offers subtitles that can be linked to your downloaded version. The challenge is that the audio does not always sync up to the movie.

Does it have subtitles? Nevermind!

I sent you a PM with a link to a jelly who I think speaks fluent French.

@Mimishu1995 I got your pm and thought I would answer here. It looks like a good film but I’m not fluent in French. I can watch films in French with french subtitles and be ok but without subtitles I get lost and can’t follow it. Hmm. I’m not sure what to suggest. Find someone local who speaks French and get them to watch it with you and explain the plot? Watch it lots of times? Use a voice translation app? That might work. You could translate to English as you can understand English well and the translation will be better as the languages are closely related

@Stinley a voice translation app! Why didn’t I think of that before? I’ll give it a shot.
