Rio Olympics is here. How excited are you? Would you be interested in watching any of the games in the biggest sporting event featuring athletes around the world?

On a scale of 0 to 10, about 3. Once it gets underway I may get more caught up in it.

NerdyKeith's avatar

Not excited at all. I never pay any attention to them whatsoever. Sorry but it just doesn’t interest me.

Seek's avatar

It would take honest effort to care less.

ucme's avatar

Love them

zenvelo's avatar

Not at all. I am wondering more about how many athletes will come down with some gawd awful staph infection or bizarre virus.

canidmajor's avatar

I love that there is a Refugee Team, but I am concerned about the gross failure of Rio to safeguard the health and well-being of the athletes.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

I am disappointed in the opening ceremony. Load of crap. Turning off sound of tv too many commercials during opening ceremonies. Wtf really commercials?

imrainmaker's avatar

Yup..must have read story of the Syrian girl participating in swimming who pushed a sinking dinghy full of migrants from Turkey to Greece to save life of her family.!!

ucme's avatar

Was never going to compare to Frankie Boyle’s London 2012 OC

It really amazes me when people sitting at comfort of their homes complaining about it while athletes on the field will be putting everything they can despite of the difficulties they are facing! It is dream of their lives just to participate in the event like this. Can’t even imagine amount of efforts put in for a race of 10 seconds by an athlete over the years.

BellaB's avatar

I’m very interested in the refugee team. They really represent what this is about – sports for the sheer love/joy of it.

I’ll follow swimming since that’s my personal addiction and I’m always keen in watching details of their strokes and strategy.

Pachy's avatar

Meh.

Also worried prior about Zika and terrorism.

LuckyGuy's avatar

Little interest. I am curious to see how close The Economist’s medal predictions are to reality.

johnpowell's avatar

I got the gold medal in not caring.

However, I love the winter Olympics. I just don’t care about the summer ones.

JLeslie's avatar

I’m about a 7 out of 10. I love the whole world in one place. It warms my heart.

I want to see the diving most of all. Some of the gymnastics too. I like the Winter Olympics more.

I also was happy to hear about the refugee team. That’s pretty cool.

I’ve been a big Olympics fan for years, in fact for decades, winter and summer, and for the past 15 or 20 years they’ve been the only thing I watch on TV besides presidential debates. But this year I’m just not drawn to it. NBC has never done as good a job of televising them as ABC used to do, and I just don’t think I can stand watching Bob Costas one more time. Maybe I’ll tune in when they get to the gymnastics events.

I am truly disgusted by the corruption, lack of preparedness and health issues that Brazil is presenting. And that poor people in this broke country are suffering even more while money is being spent on this. I don’t always feel this way about the Olympics but I feel this way this year. I approve of the athletes who decided to forgo participating for the sake of their health or potential children and I realize it is a heartbreaking decision to make.

I wonder how Rio was awarded the contract to host and I am beginning to question the value of the Olympic Games as structured. Maybe a permanent site – as has been suggested – would be best.

Well, you did ask how I felt…...

First Gold medalist is 19 year old teen from USA beating former WC!

kritiper's avatar

VERY excited! But not about the sports so much.
Rio is a very beautiful, exotic place. It is winter in the Southern hemisphere. The average high temp for August is 78 degrees, low 66, average rainfall 2”
There is lots of crime. The bay is full of trash, raw sewage, and antibiotic resistant viruses. And, like the superbugs in the water, there is the Zika threat that will continue long after the Olympics are over.
There is also the real threat of terrorist attacks.
So, yes, I am very excited. Not that I want anything bad to happen, only that there is the possibility of historical events/results occurring.

I was just talking about how blasé everyone seems to be about them. I can’t remember another time people seemed to care less. That said, I don’t care either. I usually like watching the opening ceremonies, but the older I get, the more jaded I become. There’s always so much corruption involved that it’s s hard to be interested.

SecondHandStoke's avatar

Watched the Parade of Nations.

Why weren’t any of the North Koreans smiling?

@ucme Love the new avatar.

Tell me, what’s it like to express national pride without getting a bunch of political correct grief?

Pied_Pfeffer's avatar

Just very slightly. Did anyone else spot the irony in the first gold medal going to an American for shooting?

ucme's avatar

@SecondHandStoke Haha, another reason to rejoice in not being american ;-}
This place & sport don’t mix, hence the thoroughly predictable whinefest

Kropotkin's avatar

Couldn’t give a damn. I won’t be watching any of it at all.

I don’t know any of the athletes. I don’t gain anything from them winning. I’ve no reason to have any emotional investment in their success or failure.

The Olympics are a waste of resources and a transfer of wealth from the poor to the rich.

The Olympics and all other significant sporting events are opportunities for corporations to advertise their brands—thus perpetuating senseless consumption and waste for profit margins.

Come to think of it, I’m actually angry about the Olympics. This pointless and parasitic event should be abolished for good and consigned to history. Fuck the Olympics—and anyone excited by it.

Hypocrisy_Central's avatar

The Olympics are going on? Never noticed, guess that shows my interest level.

Seek's avatar

So, not that I’m interested in the Olympics… but my Facebook feed informed me that I might want to book a vacation to Tonga.

Mee-ow.

SecondHandStoke's avatar

@ucme

I see your point.

But how is this my fault as an individual?

dappled_leaves's avatar

The Olympics is a social and environmental catastrophe wherever it strikes. I will, as always, try to avoid hearing about it so that I won’t become more depressed about the state of humanity.

ucme's avatar

@SecondHandStoke I shall direct you to the demented quote which appears popular among the natives…
“Fuck the Olympics—and anyone excited by it

He shoots, he scores!

flutherother's avatar

I’ve been watching the archery and the tennis. I’m now giving the Olympics an 8 though I am not usually a big sports fan.

Stinley's avatar

I wasn’t thinking about it before it started but have got sucked in a little. Watched, by chance, the synchro diving where our boys got bronze and was hooked. Have watched more diving and some gymnastics (USA got gold deservedly, well done) and watched the boys get gold in the track pursuit in the cycling. Feeling a bit proud to be british which is not like me.

JLeslie's avatar

^^The synchro diving is amazing. The Chinese women are like watching a mirror.

Brian1946's avatar

I’ve enjoyed watching the gymnastics performances, especially the highlights of Simone Biles’ perfect dismount(s) on one or more of her routines. The highlight of her dismount was so brief that I wasn’t able to determine from which exercise she was dismounting.

I’m looking forward to seeing more of the women’s basketball games and track & field events.

However, nothing compares to when I ‘won’ two gold medals 20 years ago. ;-)

Brian1946's avatar

Contrary to what might be seen in my photo, I do NOT have a tongue attached to the left-front side of my scalp! :-0

Stinley's avatar

Another team gb cycling gold!!

imrainmaker's avatar

@stinley – you’re on a roll..)

Stinley's avatar

Watching the cycling again tonight. Team GB are certainly on a roll (I saw what you did there @imrainmaker)

ucme's avatar

<<<< We are going to surpass our pre games target of 48 medals & might even remain ahead of the chinese in 2nd place in the medal table.
Loved every minute & look forward to more golds from Jason Kenny, Laura Trott & Alistair Brownlee

Stinley's avatar

I’m really liking the games this time.

Stinley's avatar

Laura Trott. Amazing!
