What should I listen to?

Asked by aaronou (735points) July 31st, 2008

At the moment, I am listening to some music, and I always enjoy finding new music that I can appreciate. I am just looking for some suggestions of some stuff that I ought to listen to that I might not have heard. Here’s a short list of some of the bands I like to help guide the suggestions: U2, Coldplay, Augustana, Goo Goo Dolls, Switchfoot, The Myriad, Sleeping At Last, Mae, Matt Costa. Even if it doesn’t match up with these artists, if it’s just that good, and I have to hear it, let me know.

Any of the last recordings by Johnny Cash, especially the very last one. I like music of all kinds (except maybe mainstream country and most opera) and these songs affected me in a big way.

There’s a French techno band called Daft Punk. There beats were used in kanye west’s stronger. Around the World and one more time are my favs from them.

Ya, I’m digging Band of Horses. I definitely know Red Hot Chili Peppers, Norah Jones, and Foo Fighters, all good artists. I’ll be making my way to listening to the other suggestions.

There is a wonderful site I just discovered called Muxfind for looking up music that’s similar to your tastes. Just type in your target band, and it’ll give you play lists made by people who also listen to that band!

Oh, that sounds good, that’ll probably be good.

While you’re there, check out The Mountain Goats, especially the song Dance Music, or Lion’s Teeth

Check out Alabama 3 (known in the US as A3 due to a lawsuit by the country band Alabama). They are from the UK and are a blend of alternative, country, techno, soul. Like nothing else you’ve heard. A great album to introduce them to you would be Exile on Coldharbour Lane.. They are best known for Woke Up This Morning, the tale end of this song is used as the theme of “The Sopranos.”

@uberbatman: that was a great song. I really love how upbeat and bright the mountain goats can sound, until you start to realize what they’re saying. Case and point; No Children.

aaronou's avatar

@foolaholic – That song does sound dismally morbid.

And thanks everyone for your suggestions!

I’m really diggin’ Phish right now…

I highly recommend Pandora. You begin with a song you like, then it comes up with others you might enjoy. You give the song thumbs up or down, and it continues to pick based on your likes and dislikes. It is a lot of fun, and I’ve discovered some great music there.
