I liked the ways that John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and Ben Franklin spoke and debated points. It makes me ill to see the way a group of asps, er, snakes and those who believe that they actually interpret the true meaning of the original governmental documents when making important decisions. Kennedy’s “Ask Not” speech had a big influence on me. I doubt that it would mean one whit to the snowflakes of today, however. IMO
Padraig Pearse’s speech at the grave of O’Donovan Rossa 1 August 1915. The closing words are:
“Life springs from death; and from the graves of patriot men and women spring living nations. The Defenders of this Realm have worked well in secret and in the open. They think that they have pacified Ireland. They think that they have purchased half of us and intimidated the other half. They think that they have foreseen everything, think that they have provided against everything; but the fools, the fools, the fools! — they have left us our Fenian dead, and while Ireland holds these graves, Ireland unfree shall never be at peace.”
The following year was the Easter Rising and by 1922 Ireland was a free state though Padraig Pearse did not live to see it.
FDR was an impressive speaker. You feel better about things- even all these years later. Eleanor Roosevelt was an excellent speaker also. Facinating people.
