Are you going to look at the Perseid meteor shower tonight?

Asked by LuckyGuy (43865points) August 11th, 2016

It is tonight and tomorrow night! Perseid Meteor Shower .
You’ll need to find someplace dark and let your eyes grow accustomed to darkness. Stay away from your devices for 10 minutes: no email, no facebook, no nuthin’. Can you do it?

I have my lawn chair ready. I’ll spray for mosquitoes about 7 pm so they don’t bother me when I am out there at 10–11 pm or maybe even midnight if I fall asleep.
I will also have my bat sonar detector running just for fun.

If it’s not overcast! We’ve had clear clear skies for a long time…and yesterday the storms started rolling in. Ack! I really want to see these! I figured, if it’s clear, I’ll put the dogs in the car and drive away from the loom of the urban light.

I was a huge astronomy lover when I was a kid but now that I live in an area so lighted up at night it’s hard to see the stars at all, I’ll have to just settle for a hot shower at bedtime. :(

Enjoy, @LuckyGuy, and spot one for me…

Dutchess_III's avatar

I hope so. I wish we could go to the lake.

Coloma's avatar

Will be clear and starry up here on my hill away from the city lights but…I am also under the canopy of a lot of big Oak trees so may have to take a little stroll to a clearing. I might catch a few but have to be up by 7 tomorrow so can’t be a late night. My best viewing was one year, I think 2010 or 11 when a friend and I drove higher up in the mountains here, stayed up all night and saw some really great zingers.

YARNLADY's avatar

I wish I could. We can’t see anything here in the city, and I can’t drive in the dark. There is an official viewing place about 25 miles from here, which is presented by the local astronomy club.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

No I’ve seen my share from living in Jasper National Park.

We’ll see. It’s been cloudy most of the day, and we have T-storms rolling through right now. Not the pop-up storms that tend to blow over, but recurring lines of ‘em. (I like them, too, so I don’t mind having them a bit.)

jonsblond's avatar

Yes. We have a great view from our backyard. I already had a small preview the other night when I saw the brightest meteor I’ve ever seen. I took the dogs out to pee at the perfect time!

It also coincides with our eldest son’s birthday. It’s a happy day for me.

Call_Me_Jay's avatar

No luck. Thunderstorms predicted overnight.

canidmajor's avatar

Oh, @LuckyGuy, looks like most of where you are will be clouded over. :-(

LuckyGuy's avatar

It is 7:45 PM and I just sprayed a full can of Cutter’s Backyard Bug Control over an area 70 ft x 100 ft. Maybe it will make a difference. (I know… not very environmentally friendly but it might keep the skeeters, horse flies and deer flies away.)
We’ll see. Clouds seem to be moving in.

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

We are probably too far south to see it. People further north should be able to spot it (weather permitting).

LOL! OK, Hubs just got home from 3 days on the road. Driving driving driving. He’s tired. Keep that in mind when I tell you this:

A while after he got home I said, “Hubs! There’s a meteor shower tonight! We have to watch it!”
“From where? On top of the RV? We can’t see anything through all the trees!”
“Mmmm…I guess in the driveway. We can take the beer cooler and our camp chairs and kick it in the drive way!”
“OK.” <<< Why I like him.

An hour later, “So, Dutch. When does the meteor shower start?” <<He’s tired, guys! Way too used to technology. We all are.

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

Good on him @Dutchess_III. I hope you get the best view from the top of your RV. I wonder if you can take pics?

LuckyGuy's avatar

Clouded out! Rats!!!

Dutchess_III's avatar

Wait wait! Is it in the west? For some reason I assumed it was in the west. Why did I assume that? North, south is cool, but if its in the east we’ll have to find someone elses’ driveway to camp in….or the top of the RV….

kritiper's avatar

Out here in the western US, it will occur later, say about 2 AMish. I plan to be out at some point since I tend to sleep in 3 to 4 hour stages.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Well, I guess I’ll find out. We’re packin’ up and movin’ out now!

Dutchess_III's avatar

>_< cloud cover. Sheet lightening. No go. Where the hell did the clouds come from? And is it gonna rain or is it not??

syz's avatar

I have too much city glow here, so abut 1:00 am I’ll drive out to Falls Lake.

jonsblond's avatar

It just became overcast and this is coming. Oh well. Maybe I’ll catch some stragglers tomorrow night.

syz's avatar

Well, it wasn’t the 120/hour that was promised. I saw 12 good sized ones and some little glows/flickers in about an hour.

dappled_leaves's avatar

Too bright here, sadly. Oh well, every few years I end up in the middle of nowhere when it hits, and I’ll look forward to that.

YARNLADY's avatar

I took my lounge chair to the darkest part of my yard, where all the other lights were hidden, and after about ½ hour, I saw several bright flashes of light. I didn’t see any streaking.

Stinley's avatar

It was cloudy where I am but it’s a beautiful day here today so maybe catch the stragglers tonight.

I think the shower goes across the whole sky but originates in the Perseus area. This is near Cassiopeia which is the W-shaped cluster of 5 stars (the W is often on its side)

LuckyGuy's avatar

Friday morning here.I will try again tonight. But it will have to be well after 1 am so the Moon doesn’t light up the sky too much.
I’m glad at least @YARNLADY and @syz got to see something!

Call_Me_Jay's avatar

I went looking for pictures and found a little video – from the ISS they look down on the meteor shower.

Matt and I wanted to go last night but we both slept like shit on Wednesday night so we were worried about being excessively sleep deprived for work today. So last night around 6pm we’re like “let’s take a nap so we can stay up tonight.” But we’re stupid and didn’t set an alarm. Woke up disoriented and hungry at midnight. We’re like “welp….we’ve gotten six hours of sleep and aren’t going to fall back asleep anytime soon so let’s go.” Drove way out of the city and arrived at a big field around 1. Good timing cuz the moon had just set. Saw probably 20–30 meteors, some quite bright, before the clouds rolled in at 2. Have dozens of new mosquito bites, but still worth it.

Then we got on our phones to look for a Denny’s in the area, but the nearest one was 20 miles in the wrong direction, so we went home and ate some peanut butter straight out of the jar, took sleeping pills, and went back to bed.

I feel surprisingly well rested today.

canidmajor's avatar

Best ^ astronomy event story ever. :-D

LuckyGuy's avatar

@Mariah That’s the way to do it!!!

Dutchess_III's avatar

It’s Friday. Per chance I can get Rick to take us to the lake tonight.

LuckyGuy's avatar

May all your skies be clear.

Coloma's avatar

I went out for about an hour but the moon was brighter than I expected. Saw a couple feeble little meteors but had to put myself to bed so I could be up and at ‘em by 7. I am up but not quite at ‘em for another 20 minutes or so. haha

A couple of years ago I took my girls out at night to look at this. They both oohed and aahed. Then confessed afterwards that they hadn’t seen anything!

Dutchess_III's avatar

I packed up the two kids I had at the time, in 1986, in the middle of the night, and we went to Lake Afton observatory and I got pictures of Haley’s comet. Ate breakfast at McD’s afterward, at 5 a.m. I wanted it to be something they remembered. But I don’t know if they did. I’ll have to ask them.

Coloma's avatar

Nobody went to lake Placid? lol

Inspired_2write's avatar

Slept until 2Am then got up to view two fireballs about an hour apart!
Waited until dusk as it was suppossed to show 200 per hour, but never saw as it became very hazzy and cloudy then.
Stayed up anyways to photograph the Sunrise at 6:30 Am..got some nice photgographs, so it wasn’t a total loss.
I realized that I need a much more powerful camera next time.
Perhaps a cheap telescope that has a camera mount?
I have seen telescopes mounted with a Tablet to view the Eclipse..looked great.

LuckyGuy's avatar

1 am. Cloudy again. Oh well. We can use the rain.
