How can a search engine know exactly what you want to look for before completely finishing the query?

Asked by AshlynM (10684points) August 16th, 2016

I started to type something into Google and several choices popped up and one of them was what I was looking for. I hadn’t finished typing in my search yet.
I had never looked this up before so I was curious how did it know what I was looking for? Is it based on my previous searches about other unrelated items?

Based on what other people that typed the same ended up clicking on when they went to the page of results.

Google also bases its recommendations on your previous searches. For example, it knows I live in the US, so if I am looking for a certain town, it will recommend the US town before one of the same name in the UK or Australia or something.
