Any song you're listening on repeat?

Asked by olivier5 (3094points) August 17th, 2016

Sometimes a song can say a lot, or resonate with what we’re thinking or aiming for at a particular moment, or just feel absolutely splendid. For whatever reasons, we listen to it again and again, until of course we move to something else…

Anything like that on your end? Please share, with a youtube link if possible. I’ll start:

Kate Bush – Wow (and a lot of other songs by Kate Bush)

I’ve been hung up on music from Jayme Stone’s Lomax Project. All of the songs are fascinating. When Margaret Glaspy sings, there’s a chance I’ll cry. Her phrasing is extraordinary. Live? There can be a problem as I drip drip drip away.

Sheandoah

The other music that I play a lot is from A-Wa. They’ve been in Toronto twice lately and put on an insanely fantastic show. Lots of singing, dancing and sweating happens. And laughing.

Habib Galbi

ok – one more thing. Alaa Wardi. I’ve had a few late night youtube binges with him. He’s a great talent. It started with No Woman No Drive for me and went on .. and on .. and on.

oh god. it happened again. fell into the Alaa Wardi hole

Evolution of Arabic Music

brilliant and funny

this guy is the Arabic Weird Al

Not at the moment.

I do often back to Katatonia’s “Soil’s Song” on The Great Cold Distance album.

@BellaB Thanks for the Arabic tracks. I loved the A-Wa video and song. Alaa Wardi i have to explore more.

How’s your belly dancing these days? (can’t resist to ask)

@Seek You got me googling there.

Haunted song. I like it, also the lyrics. Not that I understand them but that’s okay. I like strange lyrics.

From some lyrics site:

….
Mask
Your face well hidden
Keep your last words in your hand
Fold it and open up
Time to go
Release the glow
.
Evacuate
Assemble here
Soil’s song
In your throat
Future death
In your reach
Who’s first
Ok
.
False
The dream is so far

English isn’t their first language (and likely not their second). The band is from Stockholm. Still, I really love the atmosphere in their music, even if the lyrics raise more questions than answers sometimes.

Hubby and I often debate and discuss what they’re talking about.

Florence + The Machine – Dog Days Are Over

I picked up the CD Lung on a whim, it was $3 at the thrift store. I liked it. I watched some videos on Youtube.

A couple of days ago someone pointed me to this a capella performance ; It’s not my usual taste but for some reason I’ve watched it about ten times.

Then today in the grocery store the Florence + The Machine were serenading me over the loudspeakers.

Anyway, I like the music. Great song, and it’s following me everywhere.

I have no idea what the lyrics are about, I have a weird condition where I can’t grasp lyrics because the music takes up all my attention.

olivier5's avatar

@cookieman Thanks man, truly! I loved Walking on a Dream by Empire of the Sun, and Dislocation by The Counting Crows. Also thanks for the Stan Getz entry, always and forever cool.

@Call_Me_Jay That’s one of my favorite Florence tunes.

@Filmfann Thanks for the introduction to Jackie Wilson. A bit on the cheesy side for me but I guess there will be moments when I will cherish that song.

@Seek Hubby and I often debate and discuss what they’re talking about.

I know the feeling. It’s a bit like a rorschach test: the listener invests his / her own thoughts in the interpretation, and often two different fans of the same song would have totally different interpretations of the same lyrics.

@olivier5: Great. I’m glad you enjoyed them.

this one is great, too.

I really like this folk song This is the best (only) version I can find on YouTube.

olivier5's avatar

Thanks, @flutherother, I have a soft spot for central Asian music. Maybe you know Daler Nazarov from Tajikistan?

Daler Nazar—Dukhtar-e-Dehqan (the Farmer’s Daughter)

@ragingloli This will please my 12-yr-old… :-)

A guy I have been listening to for years is Alain Souchon. The lyrics and music are always so absolutely perfect that you can listen to his songs thousands of time. Sorry, it’s in frog language.

C’est déjà ça (on emigration, revolt, music, and Sudan)

Et si en plus y’a personne (what if there was no god above?)

flutherother's avatar

@olivier5 I hadn’t heard of Daler Nazarov before but I liked that song. Jamyang Dolma is another favourite singer of mine.

olivier5's avatar

Thanks for the introduction to Jamyang Dolma—she’s got a surprisingly low-pitched voice. I see she’s from Tibet and sings in Mandarin.

Daler Nazarov is from Tajik Badakhshan, aka the Pamir, aka the “roof of the world”, which has always been a link between Central Asia and China. He sings mostly in Persian.

As always, enjoy your musical leads @olivier5 .

@flutherother – thank you for that as well. Really enjoyed listening.

I follow the Mongolia Live page on FB and they often have beautiful musical offerings

I’ve watched this one many times

@BellaB Thanks for the link. I liked that song also. I will check out the Mongolia Live page too.

Ayo – It’s Supposed To Be Love

That’s a cover of an Abbey Lincoln song. I like both vocalists and versions. Of course Abbey was the queen of jazz vocalists in her time, while Ayo is just a débutante.

KT Tunstall – Other Side Of The World
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eu7Zs5JuMvk

The fire fades away
Most of everyday
Is full of tired excuses
But it’s too hard to say
I wish it were simple
But we give up easily
You’re close enough to see that
You’re the other side of the world to me

Let start a riot. I hear let’s startle Ryan.

Maybe because of Trump’s election, I got this song turning into my head these days:

Joe Cocker – N’oubliez Jamais

Every generation has it’s way
A need to disobey…
It’s in your destiny
A need to disagree
When rules get in the way
