I do not use primer and was told I needed to
as “everyone” uses it now! How is it different
from foundation and what are the pros and cons?
What does it actually achieve?

Moisturizer. Makes things go on smoother.
But I use moisturizer regularly whether I’m wearing makeup or not.
Primer does two things. It minimizes your pores and makes your make up last longer and go on better.. It also tends to be more expensive. It can be used with foundation.
I don’t, but depending on your skin you might think it’s worth it. Try it, see what you think.
I’ve used it and it does make a difference. It also evens out your skin tone and yes, makes your make up application ( foundation ) go on extra smoothly and evenly.
I don’t think I wear enough make-up to notice a difference. And the first time I used primer it was something fancy from Urban Decay, so I think it ruined any chance other primers might have had. Whatever that primer was it basically waterproofed my entire face, which was kind of magical.
As @Coloma wrote, it provides a base for your foundation. It’s the same principle as using a primer before you paint a wall or a car. It provides a base for your foundation and helps produce a smoother, more long-lasting result. I use a primer if I’m wearing foundation. However, mostly these days I use a tinted moisturiser rather than foundation.

There is foundation and primer two in one available. Give it a go.
I have difficult skin. Very difficult. Every day I camouflage my skin with expensive L’Oreal foundation which is the only one I have tried that suits my skin. I don’t use primer. I’m not sure I have heard of it apart from the product suggested by @Adrian1234 for toning down redness. Clinique do a product for that, which I have tested but never blown the money on. I am interested because my nose coverage never lasts.
I’ve never heard of it! I’ve heard of foundation but I don’t use it. I have it but never use it. What I do use every day religiously for the past 20 years is moisturizer with an SPF in it. I put it on my neck and throat too. I notice a lot of older women have freckles on their chest area and I don’t want that. I know my skin looks good and I credit good genes and the daily SPF.
The moisturizer definitely makes the makeup go on easier.
I use primer for shows and photoshoots. It’s just like using primer when you’re painting – it creates a solid, clean base for what you’re putting on top. Once the primer is on, I put the full face on, with a setting powder on top. Nothing is moving/melting for hours once that happens.
If I’m not performing, I don’t put anything on my face.
Smashbox Photo Finish oil-free is my preferred primer. Urban Decay is one I’ve used with some success as well.

When I was in theater, (back in the 1970’s) I used something like a primer. The purpose was to moisturize, as well as to seal the skin against the makeup. It also made it easier to remove the makeup after the performance.
Is a primer your skin color or white and what is the difference
between a tinted moisturizer and a primer?
What would you use to cover age spots…heavier foundation
or a concealer? And now I hear I am suppose to be putting
on my foundation with a brush???? Who uses a brush kinda
like a paint brush for their foundation?
@MooCows Concealer first then foundation over to even it all out. Rub in the foundation. I wouldn’t use a brush, just your fingertips is fine.
The primer I use is clear.
Brushes are the standard for applying makeup if it is done professionally – foundation/concealer/lipstick – everything.
@MooCows , moisturizers and primer are entirely different types of products with different uses.
My primer looks like a moisturiser. It’s clear when I use it on my skin. I also use a brush to apply foundation. It provides a more flawless finish. Some people use a sponge. I used to. Now I do use a brush.
I have a few different ones. One is to add light to my face as I believe as we age the light goes out!
Some contain silicone, which I hear blurs wrinkles. I have a lot of primers, I am a makeup addict, oddly though I don’t trowel it on.
(One would think I do, if they saw the draws and draws of makeup I have!).
This all sounds like so much trouble. I only put lotion on my face and lip balm on my lips. Occasionally I’ll wear mascara.
@jonsblond believe me I would be like that if I could but I get so many comments about my skin if I don’t cover it up. I’ve been a lot happier since I have taken to wearing makeup daily. Just the odd comment now.
