Are rats good pets to have?

Of all the easily available rodent pets, rats are the most intelligent and most trainable. As to their interactions with other species, I have no idea.

Hedgehogs are better.

Just get your pet rat a rat friend; the same sex of course. My childhood cats used to get along fairly well with my pet rats. No, my cats did not try to eat my rats; they used to let the rats crawl around on them. One of my cats would even clean the rats. But, unless you are very adept at training cats, I wouldn’t recommend it.

hmm well pete hedgehogs might be better I have one and they are very cute and nice but this is a rat question not to be mean but you can talk about hedgehogs on my hedgehog question site thingee.

I had a female fancy mouse named Pepperoni… I still have a picture of her too. I thought the world of her, bought her premium food, a $80 cage, excercise wheels, toys, all that stuff: But anytime I got near her she scuttled away in fear and would often appear out of nowhere to bite my hand. She was like this with everyone that approached her cage.

I had to “set her free”. Sold the cage. My dog is still great, however… 13 years old as of this past July :)

Perhaps if you took more care with your spelling, your punctuation, and the content of your discussion, you would receive a “kinder, gentler” caliber of comments.

@kt This might be a good place to begin to practice your grammar and punctuation. I assume you’ll be in high school soon, and this type of writing is not going to be very effective if you want to do well.

Since you are only 13, maybe you should take the advice of us who are a bit older than you. If you do not care, then why are you on this site? I come to fluther because I do care what other people have to say. Fluther is a great learning tool. There is another 13 year old on fluther who is very articulate and courteous, even when she doesn’t agree (much more so than I am sometimes).

kt, no one is going to come to this posting and “ask a question about a rat”. That’s not how this site works. That’s why people have been asking you to read the guidelines.

Fluther is a place for intelligent discourse on various subjects. Someone posts a question, everyone else answers and/or discusses. Please use the site properly. If you are not able to use the site properly, then you may be happier functioning in a venue that is more suited to your age group.

Well im going into junior high this year but im only mad because each time I apoligize people cut me down more just to get at me. Yes I came on this site to listen to people but seeing all I get to listen to is people that hate me you can figure out why I am mad and dont even say you dont hate me your probbaly at your computer giving me the finger if your not happy with me then leave no ones stopping you and some might be encouraging you.

No one hates you. We don’t know you enough to hate you. It is very frustrating when one tries to give advice to someone and she/he pays no attention to it. If you want to be a part of the fluther community then you must abide by the guidelines. If not, then do not expect for others to be courteous to you. And, if you don’t like us, then why would you want to join fluther?

My friend had a pet rat (or numerous ones) and he liked them, so yeh, I guess they are decent pets, he seemed to think so and I wouldn’t doubt him :)

I found this on my email this morning. I’ve always been a little concerned about Eric (ktwizzle) finding these chat rooms as he gets older, you know what you hear about chat rooms. But you people are hilarious, I have had a very good laugh with my coffee this morning. My son is 12, and a big sweet heart, but does get a little defensive. Growing up, my brother and I had 2 rats, and they were good pets. Cleaning the cage was a pain, but they were nice to have around. The cats were afraid to go near the rats! It’s fun to have the rat sit on your soldier. I love them and I think you would too. =)

It is easy to take care of and it costs small money. I think it is a kind of nice decision.
