What do you like on TV these days?

Asked by Call_Me_Jay (14028points) September 2nd, 2016

I turn up my nose at TV but dang, some of the cable series are fantastic.

I recently used the free first month of Amazon Prime to see The Man in the High Castle. It’s great.

I was sold, I bought a Prime subscription and I am watching:

The Man in the High Castle
The Americans
Mr. Robot

The weather channel and NBR (nightly business report) on PBS, but you can get both online. Local news is more local on television.

I read an editorial piece recently about how much good TV content there is and there really is! I’m not sure what my favourites are, there are so many series I like. What’s The Man in the High Castle about? I couldn’t get into The Americans. Not sure why. I did really like Mr. Robot.

Call_Me_Jay's avatar

@RedDeerGuy1 You get American PBS in your part of Canada? Or is PBS something else there?

Call_Me_Jay's avatar

@Earthbound_Misfit The Man in the High Castle is based on a Philip K. Dick novel, where World War II ends in a US defeat. The eastern US is a Nazi colony and the west coast is Japanese.

The alternative history is amazing to me, where being a patriotic American means serving Imperial Japan or the Nazis. The sets and costumes and details are wondrous.

I want art to make me feel what life would be like in a different place and time, whether they are real or fiction. The Man in the High Castle delivers.

@Call_Me_Jay Spokane and Edmonton and Calgary. But we can’t order anything over the border which sucks because my grandpa’s donated $10,000 in 1995 to PBS when he found out that I watched NOVA on PBS and said that I love science.

Most television is either insulting to the intelligence or becomes insulting to the intelligence (I’m looking at you Arrow and Flash) over time in response to the constant pressure to appeal to the lowest common denominator. I haven’t owned a television set in 25+ years and I pick and choose what to watch carefully. Currently, this is what I regard as worth the time spent watching it:

Dark Matter – The closest thing to Firefly since it went off the air. The complex characters, shades-of-grey morality, and willingness to develop both the setting and the characters is pretty rare. The first season was a bit uneven, but the second season has been wonderful.

Mr, Robot – It’s already on your list, so I don’t have to tell you how quirky, tight, interesting, well-plotted, and gripping the show is. And their willingness to have a protagonist who is not just damaged but severely broken is awesome.

Mayday: Air Crash Investigation – I can’t get enough of this show. The recreations are completely realistic and not exaggerated for the sake of drama, the science is legit, and I’m constantly learning things about geopolitics, physics, meteorology, economics, and a host of other fields one wouldn’t expect from a detailed analysis of air crashes.

Powers – I like Sharlto Copley to begin with, but this show is—or rather, was—unique on television. Based (very loosely) on a comic book, it’s about a thoughtlessly self-centred superhero who loses his powers and after experiencing an existential crisis decided to join the police department. They hire him as a publicity stunt, but as he develops he turns into an interesting, damaged, and interestingly damaged character. A sort of extended meditation on what “power” means, and why the person with the biggest gun or strongest punch might not be the most dangerous. Sadly, it was too intelligent for television and it was just cancelled after the second season.

Hoarders – A guilty pleasure for me. The candid and unflinching voyeuristic look into the life of people who are wildly dysfunctional and in complete denial. I have hoarding tendencies myself, which is why I restrict myself to possessing only enough to fill a backpack so I’m never tempted to weigh myself down with junk.

Archer – Genuinely subversive humour is in short supply these days, as most humour which bills itself as subversive, like Southpark and Family Guy, are really just bigotry wrapped up in “can’t ya take a joke?” Archer is genuinely funny, subverting social expectation instead of propping up tired alt-right hatemongering. I haven’t seen anything this funny since Brass Eye.

iZombie – I’m almost embarassed to admit watching this, but unlike other CW shows, it doesn’t take itself seriously. It’s light, fun, and has a unique schtick which makes it engaging to watch Rose McIver show off her acting chops with a totally different personality each week.

I pirate TV, so I have no idea what is available on which channels. But recently I’ve enjoyed:

Stranger Things
The Living and The Dead
Jessica Jones (I’ve hated the recent glut of superhero movies, but this is so much better)
Hell on Wheels. It’s over now, as AMC cancelled it to make room for cheaper-to-produce reality TV, but it was a great show and there are a full five seasons of awesome.
Banished
The Blacklist
Boardwalk Empire (started in 2010 and is over, but if you’ve not seen it, it’s worth it.)
Cleverman
Containment
The Night Manager
Outsiders (not the novel)

SmashTheState's avatar

@Seek I agree, Cleverman has potential, but it’s had a rocky start. I don’t like series which create as many loose ends as they can in an attempt to extort a renewal, but I have to admit I like the examination of racism, classism, and privilege through the lens of aboriginal mysticism. I’m willing to give it a second look if it comes back.

But as for Containment you really ought to watch the original, Corden. instead of the garbage US remake.

Seek's avatar

I really really want to see Corden. I just haven’t gotten my hands on it yet.

I agree that Containment reeks of remake. I keep going back because it has so much potential, and the whole apocalyptic plague thing is right up my alley.

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

That’s like asking what my favourite book or album is. I have really eclectic taste in everything. These are just some I can think of.

There are the ones everyone seems to rave about…

Game of Thrones
Walking Dead
House of Cards (I prefer the British version).
Orange is the New Black

I’ve really enjoyed watching these too. I like crime fiction – film, television or books.

The Missing.
The Following.
The Fall
The Tudors
The Blacklist
The Village
The Killing

And older series

Northern Exposure
Twin Peaks
Six Feet Under
Luther
The West Wing

Just make sure you’re using NoScipt, AdBlock, Strict Pop-Up Blocker, and Privacy Badger (or equivalent) and don’t download or install anything. If you’ve been to the skeezy pirate streaming sites before, I’m sure you know the drill. You’ll probably have to enable scripts one by one to figure out which ones will let you stream the show.

Seek's avatar

I just found them on a members-only torrent site I like. Ad free. Three episodes in the can. I’ll start one here in a bit. ^_^

One show and one show only…Ash vs Evil Dead

I have been know to watch that new “chick show” to patronize my wife called American Ninja Warrior where they have half naked beefcakes swinging from ropes like modern day Tarzans.

Seek's avatar

This half naked beefcake might be more up your alley, @Cruiser

Call_Me_Jay's avatar

Dang, you people like a lot of stuff I have never heard of!

I am binge watching Mr. Robot
season 1
episode 10

Angela looks so much like my ex it moves me

Cruiser's avatar

@Seek we watched her conquer that insane obstacle course…clapped and cheered the whole way. My wife said she is hard core and has nice abs! I thought so too!;)

anniereborn's avatar

Currently I am rewatching “Six Feet Under” and on season 4 of “Downton Abbey”

cazzie's avatar

@SmashTheState I am also watching Dark Matter but I am also watching Killjoys as well. They are my Firefly subs at the moment. (Thank YOU, Canada!) I’ve also started RPing Firefly in Second Life because I miss it so badly. I’m getting a crew together. I think I even have myself a Companion on board.

ragingloli's avatar

Almost all of it is Anime.

Seek's avatar

@cazzie – Waaaaht? Do you need a snarky engineer? or a snarky passenger? Or a snarky anything, really?

cazzie's avatar

Seek, you want to join my crew? Professor Dark Horse is my pilot. I’m the captain. We have two that want the ‘Jayne’ position’...... You want to be Kaylee- like?

Scream Queens

Sneki95's avatar

I don’t watch TV much, but the show I like to watch when I run into it is “The Science of Stupid” where someone analyzes those fail videos and explains how and why did the stunt fail.

I think it’s on National Geographic, I’m not sure.

cazzie's avatar

I’m in SL right now if anyone wants to join me.

dappled_leaves's avatar

@Call_Me_Jay PBS broadcasts into Canada, and targets Canadians in its pledge drives, and markets itself to Canadians, but we can’t watch anything via their website. It’s infuriating.

I just started watching Jessica Jones, and I love it. In the wings are Stranger Things and The Night Manager.

In a fit of nostalgia, I have started rewatching Sailor Moon again. Don’t tell anyone.

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

The Night Manager is good @dappled_leaves and I’m watching Stranger Things at the moment. I’m also watching The Living and the Dead.

The new MacGyver and designated survivor are hopefuls to watch.

Lonelyheart807's avatar

Doctor Who (if it’s ever coming back on)
Ink Master (don’t ask, and no, I don’t want a tattoo, just think the show is fascinating)
The Walking Dead
Fear the Walking Dead (although it is to TWD what preseason football is to regular football, in my opinion)
Game of Thrones
America’s Got Talent (just got into this one this past season)
football, baseball, and golf
any “educational” shows about volcanos

That’s about it…

marinelife's avatar

I only have regular TV, but I am addicted to madame Secretary and now to Designated Survivor. I also like The Orville.

Westworld

I like to test my knowledge by watching Jeopardy and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? I may watch Wheel Of Fortune to test my wits. I occasionally watch Pawn Stars and American Pickers on History Channel. Ancient Aliens is so foolish that I laugh at it. Some people believe such utter “govno”, unfortunately. I may watch Law & Order:SVU occasionally. I watch movies on AMC, SciFi, FX, TNT and WGN.
