Most television is either insulting to the intelligence or becomes insulting to the intelligence (I’m looking at you Arrow and Flash) over time in response to the constant pressure to appeal to the lowest common denominator. I haven’t owned a television set in 25+ years and I pick and choose what to watch carefully. Currently, this is what I regard as worth the time spent watching it:
Dark Matter – The closest thing to Firefly since it went off the air. The complex characters, shades-of-grey morality, and willingness to develop both the setting and the characters is pretty rare. The first season was a bit uneven, but the second season has been wonderful.
Mr, Robot – It’s already on your list, so I don’t have to tell you how quirky, tight, interesting, well-plotted, and gripping the show is. And their willingness to have a protagonist who is not just damaged but severely broken is awesome.
Mayday: Air Crash Investigation – I can’t get enough of this show. The recreations are completely realistic and not exaggerated for the sake of drama, the science is legit, and I’m constantly learning things about geopolitics, physics, meteorology, economics, and a host of other fields one wouldn’t expect from a detailed analysis of air crashes.
Powers – I like Sharlto Copley to begin with, but this show is—or rather, was—unique on television. Based (very loosely) on a comic book, it’s about a thoughtlessly self-centred superhero who loses his powers and after experiencing an existential crisis decided to join the police department. They hire him as a publicity stunt, but as he develops he turns into an interesting, damaged, and interestingly damaged character. A sort of extended meditation on what “power” means, and why the person with the biggest gun or strongest punch might not be the most dangerous. Sadly, it was too intelligent for television and it was just cancelled after the second season.
Hoarders – A guilty pleasure for me. The candid and unflinching voyeuristic look into the life of people who are wildly dysfunctional and in complete denial. I have hoarding tendencies myself, which is why I restrict myself to possessing only enough to fill a backpack so I’m never tempted to weigh myself down with junk.
Archer – Genuinely subversive humour is in short supply these days, as most humour which bills itself as subversive, like Southpark and Family Guy, are really just bigotry wrapped up in “can’t ya take a joke?” Archer is genuinely funny, subverting social expectation instead of propping up tired alt-right hatemongering. I haven’t seen anything this funny since Brass Eye.
iZombie – I’m almost embarassed to admit watching this, but unlike other CW shows, it doesn’t take itself seriously. It’s light, fun, and has a unique schtick which makes it engaging to watch Rose McIver show off her acting chops with a totally different personality each week.
