Does it kind of throw you when people often mention how smart or witty, or intuitive they are?

Asked by Dutchess_III (47126points) September 6th, 2016

I have a friend on Facebook who talks about her self in those types of terms a lot. She doesn’t strike me as all that smart, though. Shouldn’t those kinds of observations / compliments be left to the people they interact with to mention?

“Praise me, o mouth of mine!”
I hate people like that, so annoying.

There are a handful of members on Fluther that do that.

There was a coworker of mine, once, who was several rungs higher on the ladder than the rest of us, but not directly our boss per se.

He used to tell me, “It’s not bragging if it’s true. If you’re good, say so . No one knows better than you do.”

Well, sure. To an extent I think it is necessary, under certain circumstances.

The problem with my friend is, she thinks she’s all of those things. No one else does.

If I compliment myself to others this way it’s very likely I’m making a deadpan joke.

Yep. If you are those things you don’t have to tell anyone. They will figure it out.

“I am the king.”
“If you have to tell people you are the king you are not the king.”

My husband actually does this in a back door kind of way. When ever he goes out of town he comes back and spends 15 minutes telling me what his customers supposedly said about him. How knowledgeable he is and how they can depend on him, and he does what he says he’s gonna do, and he’s just Johnny-on-the spot. Except for the knowledgeable part, none of it sounds like the man I know!

That makes sense to me, though, @Dutchess_III.

When I’m at work, I’m meticulously organized, to a fault.

at home, it’s creative chaos.

Yes, it does throw me somewhat. Like when I realize I’ve stepped in cat poo and not dog poo.

It makes me laugh. Anyone who says he/she’s so smart is usually pretty stupid.

It strikes me as narcissistic, something that Donald Trump does all the time.
