How does your delivery system work in the USA?

Asked by LornaLove (10037points) September 20th, 2016

I’m in the UK and I might add I have not been here for very long. So their delivery system seems a bit of a cheek to what I am used to.

If you order so-and-so they tell you when they will deliver. However, it gets better than that, since they will only tell you the day. It could be from 8am to 8pm for example.

These are paid deliveries. As well as paid services like cable.

How does your system work, what do you think of our system?

It’s much the same in Canada – though you can sometimes request time blocks – i.e. between 8 a.m. to noon, noon to 4 p.m., 4. p.m. – 8 p.m. Of course they only occasionally show up in the requested time frame.

The question is far too vague. I mean there’s newspapers, dope and pizza, and then there’s Amazon.

@stanleybmanly Good point. I am talking about fridges, general services like cable? as mentioned above. However, we do not have drones yet with Amazon, there prime is pretty fast though. A pizza will take about an hour. You buy newspapers?

For the newspapers, “buy” is not the word off the top of my head if the thing appears on the porch every morning. I “subscribe”. But what’s in a word?

Pizza takes an hour? I can’t imagine ordering pizza from a place that takes that long. We expect delivery in 30 – 45 minutes

Okay, now I’m beginning to understand. For a major appliance like a refrigerator, stove or washing machine, a delivery time is usually prearranged with a narrow window of 1 to 2 hours. The cable thing needs more clarification as well with that word “delivery”. Are you talking about the actual delivery of the signal to the television or the setup and installation of wiring and boxes. Over here that would never be regarded as “delivery ”.

* I meant their not there. My brain is cotton wool lately.

@stanleybmanly I said ‘services’ in my question. I would consider a cable supply as being installed and delivered. A service delivery? Clearly, the cable being turned on at the main portal would not be a delivery it would be done instantly I’d imagine.

I should have made a long list of delivery scenarios.

I waited all day yesterday from 8am – 7pm for my fridge to arrive as I had paid next day delivery. When I contacted the courier they casually told me I’d be getting my fridge tomorrow. Its now 1 pm and no fridge.

@stanleybmanly Oh! so you get newspapers there free if you subscribe!

I concede your point. I buy the subscription.

For ordered items like cable, furniture, repairs etc. we are given a window of time usually in 4 hour blocks. Very inconvenient especially when you have to work.

Small packages via UPS, FedEx, USPS and Amazon…they usually put the package on the front porch ring the doorbell and runoff. Fortunately where I live theft of packages left at the door is not a problem.
