What new food can you introduce to us?
Do you have a favorite you think most of us have not tried?
I used to pass two large Japanese grocery stores on my commute. Among the huge number of alien (to me) foods one of my favorites was Tomato Prefs – little bread sticks with big flavor. Try them if you get the chance.

I’ve always enjoyed burritos and nachos that I make at home, and for the longest time I would usually top those with sour cream, just like everyone else.
But now I top them with a homemade tzatziki sauce that makes a world of difference. I sometimes wonder why I eat anything else.
In asian groceries, you can find small packages of “cuddlefish” pieces. It’s dried squid, and you pop them in your mouth and chew them for ½ hour. It’s like fish flavored gum, and completely addicting.
Trader Joes sweet chili sauce over cream cheese or cottage cheese with whole grain tortilla chips for dipping. So yummy!
Thanks for that link, @Love_my_doggie. I’ll have to try that with my next curry. (I have been mixing my basmati rice with wild rice, black rice, quinoa and orzo just to keep things interesting, but farro sounds like another good choice – maybe even a substitute.)
I bet most of you have never had real bread.
@ragingloli You would lose that bet if restricted to the people reading your answer.
@ragingloli you would lose that bet. Baking bread is a hobby of mine.
I used to bake bread in my bread machine for my chickens and geese. haha
I would use a wheat flour and then add a cup or so of scratch grains. Once I had just taken a loaf out to cool and a friend dropped over and went for the bread. I had to stop them and tell them that they’d break a tooth if they cut into that loaf full of cracked corn and barley and red millet. lol
@ragingloli Are we to understand that “real” bread is confined to loaves baked by yourself?
Store bread is not fit to feed to chickens.
@ARE_you_kidding_me You’re right, for the most part, but my goose loves his Oatnut. His big treat. Bread is just a treat for birds, not a complete diet like the poor ducks and geese live on at your local park.
Have you tried jalepeno poppers? I had them for the first time just a couple of years ago.
I bake bread too. I use a dark lager and honey.
Marmite. It’s an amazing little jar of yumminess. Spread it, use it as stock. Just a little bit goes very far.

You go to bad stores. Most grocery stores near me have a real bakery. And the smaller ones get daily deliveries from local bakeries.
Yeah…Rick brought home a loaf of in-store baked French bread from a local grocery store. To my delight it was still a little warm. Can’t get much better than that!
The bread situation has shifted to the point here that artisan loaves crowd the shelves at even the local Safeway. I mean there is a rosemary focaccia loaf from Semifreddi bakery available at our Safeway that will saturate your entire house with its heavenly aroma if you leave it sitting out. And the bread tastes better than it smells. No there is absolutely no shortage of an endless variety of spectacular breads here.
@ragingloli My neighborhood has a bread bakery. During the wee small hours of every morning, this place grinds wheatberries into fresh, whole-wheat flour and creates some amazing loaves. These products wouldn’t appeal to anyone who’s looking for chi-chi boules and baguettes (lovely, but empty, calories), but they’re perfect for somebody who’s health-conscious and cares about what he/she eats.
@Stinley Isn’t Marmite similar to Vegemite? I hear that both products are, well, acquired tastes.
Roasted seaweed snack, eat them like potato chips since I’m on a low card diet. Almost zero starch and sugar only fiber.
French fries dipped in mayo and wrapped in bacon and cheese.
OMG..I hate, hate, hate, seaweed. haha
When I was traveling in asia everything had some sort of seaweed twist. Seaweed appetizers, seaweed snacks, seaweed, seaweed, seaweed. Seaweed and squid, gag everyone loves both over there. People eat Squid on a stick like corn dogs. lol
@CWOTUS Farro is a better substitute for regular brown rice, rather than delicate basmati and jasmine rices. Much like brown rice, faro’s very hearty and chewy.
Please let me know how you use farro, and if you like it.
