Would it not appear that hate and animosity are stronger emotions than love?

Some say love is the strongest emotion, but those who have been friends for many years, then decide to have a romantic relationship, when that relationship fails, it appears the hate and animosity towards the one they professed to love is so succinct that they can no longer even be friends, and in some cases the grudge last so long inflicting or wishing bad on the other is as palpable as fog in a winter morning. That would appear that hate as an emotion is more potent than love, because once established, love hardly ever returns, even on a friendly basis. If love was that strong, would it not return at some point, to smooth out old angers, grudges and hurts?
