She didn’t have a lot of friends in the end as alcoholism stole away the few pleasant aspects of her irascible personality. But she did make regular donations to the NAACP all her life. So, when her lawyer died and they found her ashes on the lawyer’s bookshelf, the NAACP claimed them and gave her a very nice burial and placed her ashes in a small monument in front of their offices in Baltimore.

These are huge gulls with large wingspans that could take them very far out to sea. They are often the first sign of land to a sailor, many days away from their intended landing. They were considered helpful and to kill one for any reason was bad luck. To eat one would be an abomination. Men who killed albatrosses, whether by accident or intention, had the bird hung around their neck by the crew and were considered cursed and the crew cursed by their actions.
