How do harmful bacteria in your food survive the acids in your stomach?

Asked by Pandora (32436points) October 12th, 2016

I love eating eggs over easy, but I’m always hesitant about the possibility of getting salmonella. So it made me wonder. Why doesn’t the acid in our stomach kill these unhealthy bacteria?

They are of course adapted to the acids just as are our own intestinal flora.

Good information about bacteria. http://serc.carleton.edu/microbelife/extreme/acidic/index.html

As a person who studies microbes, I LOVE them all and their amazing survival. I don’t appreciate their occasional effect of me or my fellow humans. Education and respect is the key.
