What is wrong with our bichon mix ?

Asked by Aster (20028points) October 16th, 2016

Donnie is eleven years old. Two days ago he stopped moving around . Yesterday, I awoke to a 7” diameter pile of vomit and a little bit of feces on the tiles. He kept to himself and , his previously heavy intake of water almost stopped. Today we hoped he’d be better but he won’t eat and is hiding in the bushes. If we coax him inside he manages to go back out and hide. He drank a lot of water an hour ago. There is no response when petted nor any when our other dog sees someone and starts barking. He just sits there and ignores her. There is some vomit on the pillow he slept on last night. When he walks, which is rare, it’s super slowly. Are vets able to diagnose this illness? He also has cataracts and runs into things.

You need to take him to the vet.

If he passes away and you haven’t taken him to the vet, you may never forgive yourself.

When you take him to the vet, take a vomit sample, and urine and feces (if you can). And go right now.
Poor puppy, I hope he feels better.

He is closed today. I thought I might get some guesses.

There are emergency vets around, @Aster.

If you call your vet he may have an emergency number you could call. Mine did, when my lab’s stitches busted wide open at 9:00 at night and she was pumping blood like a fire hose.

If you want us to diagnose her though, I’ll give it a go: Rabies.

I’m with @Dutchess_III by symptoms alone.

Get him to an Emergency Vet, we have one 10 minutes from our house and another 25 minutes away in the next county. They are both open 24/7 but specialize in after hours or on weekends for animal under 160 pounds.

@Aster Emergency vet NOW.

chyna's avatar

Bet now! Please let us know what you find out.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Now is not the time for @Aster to go to the casinos, @chyna!

There is no “diagnosing” over the internet, only guesses (pancreatitis, diabetic ketoacidosis, tumor). But what what you describe are serious symptom and you should seek emergency care immediately.

@syz

Thanks for the Veterinary side of Fluther.

I took him to our vet this morning. I diagnosed him right: kidney failure. I cried in that room for half an hour straight when he finally came in and asked some questions and examined him. Donnie is out of his misery now; I’m glad about that for sure. But I’m sad for me! In 2 days I pick up “his” ashes in a cute carved box. Now I have to figure out where to put it. I don’t want to let them blow through the air. I want them in plain sight. Doc said at eleven this is pretty common. Thanks, guys. He was worse this morning, refusing water and had what looked like molasses in his pen. TMI ? Sweet dog; I’ll see how aimee reacts to this in the days to come. He had lost weight so fast. Plus, he had cataracts and was running into things. My sweet little Donnie.

Oh, @Aster, so sorry for your loss, but he had a good life.
My beasties are on a bookshelf in my living room, in attractive little containers, watching over us. I hope your other one won’t be too lonely, gives extra loves. <3

Oh, I’m so sorry @Aster. So very sad.

si3tech's avatar

@Aster I am so sorry for you. My heart is broken for you. It is so so hard to lose a dear pet.

chyna's avatar

@Aster I am very sorry for the loss of your pet. This is such a hard thing to do. Give extra loving to your other fur baby. You both will need it.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

@Aster I am truly sorry to hear that.

Thanks everyone. I cry then I’m alright again then the cycle continues. I think I’m glad I was in there when he gave him the shot . To be summoned with, “he’s gone now” might have been too much to take. I just don’t know but I think I’m glad I was there. And I like to think he knew I was there in that cold, strange room.

jca's avatar

Sending you comforting thoughts, @Aster. I know it’s very hard to lose a pet.

janbb's avatar

@Aster sending a hug and sympathy. I was there when my Prince was put down and was glad i was.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I was there when they put my Snuffy down. At the last second I cried out “No! No!” but it was too late.

The nurse seemed to think it was very odd that I wanted to be there.

canidmajor's avatar

I’m glad you were there. I’ve tried to be there whenever I could, I feel that it’s a blessing for them to know you’re there when they go. You were a comfort to him at the end.
