Not sure which medical plan I should choose?

Asked by chelle21689 (7907points) November 2nd, 2016

I currently have a silver plan with United Health Care. I pay $78/month and the deductible is around $1,200. Max out of pocket is $3,000.

I don’t go to the doctor much other than a visit to the gynecologist a few times a year because of my HPV. I’ve gone three times this year. So I have been getting regular check ups ($30 copay) and now I need a procedure done. I guess it will be approximately $9,000 based on where I live.

Our premium is increasing next year to $90. I was thinking of going with a high deductible plan which is $30/month, $3,000 deductible, $5,000 max out of pocket, and I would get $125 each month from my employer.

I have no idea how to figure out how much money I could save with each one. Any ideas? I tried calling my health insurance but the rep wasn’t much help.

If you know you have to have an expensive procedure done, why would you go for a higher deductible plan now – unless you can’t swing the $90 a month. It seems like a no-brainer to me. Is the $125 a month from the employer a contribution to a HSA?

I would stay with the plan you have. If you switch to the higher deductible and save $576.00 per year and even with the employers $1,500.00 per year, that is only $2,076.00 which could mean you would be on the hook for $2,924.00 if maxed out on your new $5,000.00 deductible. Does your employer offer a stipend towards your health insurance with the plan you have now?

Because it’s only a one time thing for the procedure. It’s outpatient. It wouldn’t be effective until 1/1/17. As far as I know, that’s the only issue I’m dealing with.

They don’t offer anything for the plan I have now.

A little known fact about the ACA is that you can use an agent at no cost to you to help you navigate the various plans. Not all agents are authorized to help with plans on the exchange but many are. I’m sure there is one in your area that would be happy to help you.

@Judi But this sounds like an employer provided plan so I wonder if they would help? Although, if not, the employer’s group health provider or HR person should be able to help.

Can you get the procedure done before the end of the year?

@janbb, I didn’t catch that. I thought she was choosing from exchange plans.
