How to take ownership of my own life?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24945points) November 3rd, 2016

How do I do that. From a previous question? What is the pay out to do such a thing if possible?

The pay out is what you can make of it.

Taking ownership means stop looking for everyone else to give you the answers to life, the universe, and everything, and make something happen for yourself.

@Seek Wow. That is the opposite of why I’m on Fluther. I’m searching for something. I don’t know what. Friends, someone to relate to. Meaning.

Having friends is awesome. Relating to people is great. We cannot give you purpose. Only you can do that.

@Seek I need a better way of scoring my progress in life and better long term goals.

Taking ownership also equates to taking the controls of where you wish to go, be or do in life.
In short ..Planning.
Perhaps you really just need a good life coach?

Taking ownership of your life and having purpose in your life are two different things.

I have come to accept that perhaps my life has no purpose and that is fine. Perhaps things just are and I just am.

But, the important thing is that I make the choices and choose the directions my life goes in while accepting that some things are beyond my control but my reaction to these forces are what comes from within.. That is owning my life…

There are no shortcuts. You have lots of ideas for what you would like to do with your life.

There are lots of different ways to approach the problem. It is common to list “where would I like to be in five years? ” that is not just one thing: list place you’d like to live, what work, what goals you might have.

And from there you can sit down and figure out what you need to do to get to those places. Want to move? Where? How much would it cost? What can you do to earn that and save it?

And, we here on Fluther will help you find direction for the answers you seek. But as we say here often, we don’t do your homework. You will have to work and put in time to achieve whatever you seek.

Please take a look at this Storied Mind – Recover Life from Depression

From the blog One of the hallmarks of depression is loss of motivation to do anything because you feel that your life is meaningless. You are meaningless, empty, worthless, bad, nothing but a burden. There’s no sense of future, no purpose to give you hope and help pull you back to an active life.

A sense of purpose goes along with building hope for the future, hope for recovering from depression and getting your life back. Even though you can’t focus on it when you’re struggling, hope and purpose are pretty basic for regaining a sense of who you are.

If you try the thought experiment of trying on the perspective that the events and circumstances in your life are the result of what you do and don’t do and say, that’s one definition of responsibility that has made for big shifts for me. It helped me to notice patterns of viewing things as nothing I can do anything about, and to see how that can make me feel powerless and miserable. By contrast, when I consider that from now on, what happens to me is massively affected by how I choose to be and to act, and by what I say, that perspective has me being extremely powerful about how my life turns out, and free from instead getting angry or resentful about others. Though perhaps I should say that that perspective became available and powerful for me after I had done a lot of other work on myself, my depression, and after I’d learned a lot of insights and so on.

Certainly don’t rely on the amateur, psychobabble advice you’ll get from folks off of the internet.

What do you want out of life? You could continue to glide by as you are, living off of government money and spending nearly all your time safely holed up in your apartment. Is that okay with you? If not, as appears to be the case, then make a list of things that you wish were better. Start with one of the easier changes and write down a plan for how to accomplish it. If you are stuck, you can ask for advice on Fluther. If you can make that one change then that will encourage you to try working on other items on your list.

An idea I recently came across is that of radical acceptance. It does not mean that you are satisfied with what you are, but that you accept it as your starting point without wasting time and energy blaming others.
