Do some smart people smoke etc., for the same reason that some smart people vote for Trump?

Asked by flo (13313points) November 8th, 2016

Why do some very smart people smoke or eat bad food regularly when they don’t have to?
I know it’s addiction re. the smoking etc. but why the first cigarette? And so why do some smart people vote for Trump?

Intelligence does not make one immune to the effects of peer pressure and drug addiction.

A man named Victor Serebriakoff used to like to say: “Intelligence is no barrier to stupidity.”

I added to my OP by the way @ragingloli and @Jeruba

Okay so when people are asked why any halfway intelligent person would even consider voting for Trump, there is “They have nowhere to go, they have been left behind by free trade… globalization… government failing them… They can just say “No comment”

TRULY SMART PEOPLE KNOW THAT IT IS ONLY RIGHT AND JUST FOR SOVEREIGN INDIVIDUALS TO DETERMINE FOR THEMSELVES WHAT IS SUITABLE.

JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE GROWN ACCUSTOMED TO THE OPPRESSION WE ALL ENDURE COURTESY OF OUR STATIST OVERLORDS DOES NOT MEAN THE SMART REST OF US HAVE.

This much better said by restaurateur friends of mine:

“Ultimately, we feel that matters of personal risk assessment are best left to the individual, not the State. We believe that sovereign individuals must have supreme authority over their personal choices with regard to their own body, life and behavior, without the interference of governing powers.

As advocates for this kind of freedom, we are deeply concerned that more citizens do not seem to understand the real dangers of coercive legislation. Any time you create a State apparatus capable of repression, it will inevitably fall into the hands of bullies, busy-bodies and tyrants. History has proven this time and time again.

Second-Hand Smoke is better than Second-Hand Fascism.”

@SecondHandStoke Trump hasn’t killed 6 million people so that must mean he is not a tyrant.

@flo Maybe not but his flapping maw of bigotry and sexism has set us back 60 years.

^ Please explain how.

Are you suggesting I’m going to become a lout just because Trump is one?

Coloma's avatar

@SecondHandStoke Nothing needs to be explained. Just the fact this blowhard clown has the gall to say the things he has said and expect to be taken seriously let alone respected as a leader.

Smart people smoke because they want to, it’s legal, and they have the freedom to. No one else really has a right to say anything about that. No, I don’t smoke.

flo's avatar

@SecondHandStoke So, Trump is a lout (according to your last post) and he is your hero according to your previous post?
Trump is talking about about deplorables here. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/jays-he-could-shoot-somebody-and-still-not-lose-voters.
@Coloma I was being sarcastic. I didn’t use the ~ key.
@MollyMcGuire Should everyone advice your below 18 yrs old relatives to want start smokong as soon as it’s legal for them to do so?

Most people start smoking because they think it looks like something they will enjoy. There is a buzz from the first drag you take. It’s also a quick reward, unlike the long-term punishment of poorer health. It’s an appetite suppressant. I’m not a smoker but I could envisage a point in my life where the benefits of smoking outweigh the drawbacks. I think that point has passed now for me so I’m probably out of the danger zone…
