Trump spoke about unity in his victory speech, will it happen?

Asked by JLeslie (65743points) November 9th, 2016 from iPhone

His victory speech was very good I thought. He complimented Hillary, he talked about unity in our government, and being a fair player in the world.

Do you think he really wants all those things? Will work for those promises?

I honestly do take him seriously with his intention, even though I disagree with many of the policy plans he has talked about.

I don’t trust congress or the right wing to want to cross the aisle. They talk about Obama not wanting to cooperate and I say bullshit. I blame replublican right wingers for wanting to block everything and focus on reelection. If you are a republican, but not part of the religious right, I ask you to be objective in your answer and not take my comment about the right wing personally.

I dunno. It’s hard to suss out what Trump really intends as president. He was no record to judge by and his campaign has been mostly sizzle and little real substance. All we can do now is wait and see and try to ride out whatever may come as best we can.

Regarding party affiliation
I have voted both ways. I have had Commanders in Chief from both parties and was fine with all of them.
I can understand both parties points of view. But I currently can not call myself a Democrat, because I simply can not stand the tendency in that party to imagine that their opinions are universally correct simply because it is they who have the opinion. There is a sort of social and political pseudo-intellectual conceit in that party that I really can’t take. Having said that, I oppose the death penalty, am a pro-choicer and think drugs should be legal etc.

In answer to your question…
That would be up to us folks I think.

It really all depends on how quickly the new administration and the new Congress carry out their promises.

Affordable Care Act is slated to be repealed right away; a repeal act could be on Trump’s desk on January 20. We will have a sense of what will happen on how that whole thing is carried out.

Paul Ryan has wanted to completely rewrite the tax code. That could be done by summer time.

And, whoever is the next Justice of the Supreme Court will be the arbiter of so many things like voting rights and gerrymandering; we’ll know what that leads to by the end of February.

I can’t imagine how a country so divided on issues will be united under Trump and the total Republican government.

It’s already severely divided. There have been several protest throughout the nation already. Someone said, that if he would just walk back all the negative things he said and apologized that he may get that unity. But he never will, so I doubt he will ever be seen as the president for over half the nation. I know I will never look at my fellow americans the same.
I’ve face bias for being latina and a woman. Two things that I had no control in being. Two things I should never be judged to be less than for. And last night and tonight. What I thought existed but in smaller numbers, I was wrong about. How can I ever trust my neighbor, when I’m even more convinced of the poison that exist in their heart? My heart is broken. I truly believed in our country. My husband fought for it and my son continues to fight for it. If something happens to him. How can I ever console myself. I will believe he died for nothing. For a democracy that only exist on paper but not in truth.
I’ve already pleaded with him to get out of the service. Brown skins can die for our country, but they shouldn’t have the same value of all white citizens. Women can die for our country as well, but if she gets raped, its probably her fault or she’s a liar.
Sorry. In my heart. I will exist here because I have no where else to go. But I will not unite with bigots and hateful people for the sake of saving a nation that is a farce. I will pay my bills and drink the poison water that will fill our rivers, but I will not smile and say it is sweet to make them feel better. I will endure and I will watch as the walls come tumbling down around those who set the explosives. Then I will smile, because then they will know they may have set women and minorities back but they will set their own children further back and they will not be thanked.
Nope. I can only speak for myself. I will not help unite this farce of a democracy.

@janbb I have a fantasy Trump appoints some Democrats and freaks out the Republican congress. Note the word fantasy. I’m not saying I think it is likely.

He said the only politically correct thing he could have said. But as a all-powerful independent businessman, he is accustomed to being his own boss, a dictator. Best to hang on for dear life because the shit hasn’t hit the fan yet!

Well, as they tell women in labor, rest between the pains. We are in a lull right now, savior the moment I say.
