What is a good ear mite remedy or medicine for cats?

Asked by jca (36062points) November 11th, 2016

I just got another cat a few months ago. I had him checked out at the vet and he got tested and vaccinated and everything. He had ear mites and the vet gave me some medicine in tiny vials that I poured into the cat’s ears. Since the cat was not happy about having liquid poured into his ears, I was unable to spread it around with q-tips or anything.

I think he still has ear mites because sometimes he’s pawing at his ears and I see the brown stuff inside them.

I know if I call the vet he’s going to say bring the cat in (another office visit cost).

What is a good ear mite remedy, either medicine (from Amazon perhaps?) or home remedy?

Most ear mite medications work by suffocating the mites in an oil based solution, with a little topical antibiotic in them as well. Probably best to get the medicine from your vet. You could try a little mineral oil, olive oil or petroleum jelly to clean the ears but an antibiotic component is important too. I’d ask the vet to prescribe the medication without an office visit if you have been in fairly recently in the last couple of months or so.

Might do that for you.

I just found an article saying you can also use green tea to clean the ears and ut some garlic juice from crushed garlic cloves in mineral oil for a bacteria killing effect but I would probably try to get the medicine from the vet first and then, once the condition is under control maybe use the occasional home remedy for maintenance.

Sounds like the problem is the ability to administer the ear meds. Cats are tricky, and can be difficult for even an expert tech to restrain.

Maybe try putting down a small amount of its favorite food. Something stinky , and rare like tuna in water. Then try gently administering the meds while the cat is distracted by the treat. It may take some trial and error. Once get the mites gone, they should stay gone. Just got to get over this rough patch.
