How does 'alt-right' differ from 'extremist-right'? Is 'alt-right' just a euphemism?

Asked by elbanditoroso (33520points) November 17th, 2016

The term ‘alt-right’ seems to have been coined to draw a distinction from the traditional right wing.

But ‘alt’, at least to me, seems more like a PR euphemism than a true description.

In terms of ideology or belief, how does alt-right differ from extreme right or even far right?

Are we seeing the Trump Taliban?

It’s a euphemism. They are scary people.

Alt is just the Internet-enabled version, and flamboyant version of the same racist, misogynistic, homophobic, authoritarican, xenophobic, ultranationalist toxic filth we’ve been getting from conservatives forever.

It seems to be the right movement (how ironical), but is not clearly defined as right. Their main battlefield is the internet, so you may as well call them “the internet right”. Here are some articles about them.

Their own words.

Reminds me of 9Gag.

Yeah, read their hatred for yourself, straight from their mouths. It doesn’t take much effort to see they’re no good:

“An obese lesbian that likes to write Harry Potter fanfiction is trying to Shoah our subreddit”

“TIL A Holocaust Denier gave UNDENIABLE SWORN STATEMENTS that gas chambers were real, subsequently shekels were won in court”

I don’t know. Are we sure this isn’t satire?

what is “cucked?”

Alt Right refers to a reactionary conservative movement, that probably would have remained more centrist, but felt compelled to make a distinct ideological move. They are sort of temporary but they definitely played a role in the last election.

Unfortunately, the Nazi’s, the KuKluxKlan, the Radical Nationalists, and other right wing lunatics were eager to latch onto the Alt Right because it gives them a certain legitimacy that they otherwise could never have. And they, in turn, make the Alt Right look bad.

It’s sort of like how a lot of centrist voters went left and voted for Barack Obama and in doing so, found themselves in the midst of the Anarchists, Marxists, Socialists and the other far left lunatics that inhabit the far left of the Dem party. I think it creeped some of them out, and it showed in this election.

@AnonymousAccount8 It isn’t satire. I know it seems crazy. There are a lot of shit people on reddit. Check out /r/theredpill if you want more rage.

“Cucked” is this fucking stupid term that mostly reddit Trump supports have been throwing around. At its root it means a man whose wife cheats and has another man’s child and her husband helps raise it. They think it’s the ultimate in shame and un-masculinity, so they use it as an insult because to them non-masculine == bad.

Short for cuckold – the husband of an adulteress. Derives from cuckoo bird. Also a fetish.

Hahaha. These assholes have been around since the billboard days. They’re called dickwads. Famous for not being able to get laid which is the source of much of their racism and misogyny. I guess they like AltRight better. But a dickwad by any other name is still a dickwad.

No, the Democrats didn’t install anarchists and Marxists in the White House.

Republicans give their lunatics high-paying jobs, security clearances, and power over the lives of Americans.

Boy @josie I was with you until your last paragraph. Far left individuals are not “anarchists”, “lunatics”, or “Marxists.” Some are socialists, but you’re using that word as an epithet. Medicare is socialist. Social security is socialist. You can be socialist without being a Soviet.

Call_Me_Jay's avatar

@Rarebear Josie does have a point in that other people will see “the Left” as one group including Obama and me and the anarchists breaking windows when a G20 summit is in town.

The same way I see conservatives as one group including Donald Trump, Paul Ryan, the white supremacists and Tim McVeigh.

Rarebear's avatar

@Call_Me_Jay But neither of which is true. I am a classical liberal, which means that I value freer markets, economic freedom, lower taxes, open immigration, and personal liberty. Those are “conservative” values. Does that make me a target of your hate?

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

Alt-right is a broad stroke euphemism for a large group of people with extreme views on several issues. They may associate with the right wing and people usually place them there but this need not always be the case. It’s like that phone call with an odd area code. You don’t know who is on the line, what they are selling or if it is even human but you know it’s something you don’t want. You can find out this by answering but you’ll always end up hanging up the phone anyway. May as well consider them all the same in this regard.

@Rarebear
Are you saying the Anarchists, Marxists and Socialists and left leaning lunatics that have no political name, the ones who actually voted I mean, voted for somebody other than the Democrat?

Rarebear's avatar

@josie You’re question is flawed. First of all, I live in the Berkeley area and I know exactly zero Marxists. The two anarchists I know are actually right-leaning libertarians. Most Republican physicians I know do not want to get rid of Medicare, which makes them socialists.

JLeslie's avatar

@josie Funny, I think of the anarchists as the extreme Libertarians, and they usually hook into the Republican party.

The Democrats are talking about how we need a candidate who is way more progressive to get the win back next time, and my feeling is we need someone moderate. Maybe I’m way off, but for now I’m sticking with my intuition.

jca's avatar

If I’m not mistaken, anarchists want no government (anarchy). Liberals and leftists want bigger government, more regulation, more programs and services, etc.

Call_Me_Jay's avatar

Liberals and leftists want bigger government, more regulation, more programs and services, etc.

That’s the cartoon version from conservatives, yes, that liberals want more government regardless of where or why.

jca's avatar

@Call_Me_Jay: I’m not a conservative by a long shot.

Call_Me_Jay's avatar

@jca Regardless, you’re parroting the conservative myth about liberals.

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

On average, not so much a myth. The myth to be fair is that they actually want those things for selfish ends which is clearly not the case. It’s equivalent to the myth that conservatives want to maintain their hegemony over minority groups and return america to pre 1950s era status quo. Not the case either but apparently not so clear to some.

Espiritus_Corvus's avatar

AltRight is a euphemism for the American Sturmabteilung, those ignorant lowlifes you saw beating up people at Trump rallies and yelling “ARREST HILLARY!” and obscene things at the press. American scum.

Rarebear's avatar

@Mariah Holy shit. As I type this I am sitting at a physicians desk with two female physicians. We all just lost our appetite for lunch.

Call_Me_Jay's avatar

The author of the science and math story is the guy who organized a racist Twitter mob to harass Leslie Jones with gorilla pictures, n**ger jokes and counterfiet “Leslie Jones” tweets portraying HER as the racist.

He’s not some random guy, he’s a Breitbart editor, one of the top employees of Trumps chief strategist.

Mariah's avatar

People ask me why I read shit on the internet that pisses me off. I’ve always said I’m trying to keep my eye on them. Because look, they’re in our Cabinet now. Jesus Christ.
