Windows 10 Update and Security refuses to launch. What is the solution?

Asked by Mimishu1995 (23800points) November 17th, 2016

This issue has been around for some time and it is pissing me off. I use Windows 10. When I open Setting every option work fine. But when I click on Update and Security it just freezes the whole Setting window. Sometimes it even crashes the Setting. I know some of you is currently using Windows 10, so do any of you encounter the same problem? And how can I fix it?

1)
First I would run Disk Cleanup. You may be short on drive space. Even if you have plenty of drive space it will not hurt

Disk Clean in Start/ Search box and you should be able to choose the program .

It takes sometime to start up, on screen it says “Calculating…”

After it calculates click “Clean up system files” (do not click OK yet)

It calculates again, then you hit OK and it will run for a while.

2)
Next download and run the Windows Update Troubleshooter.

These are just first steps. It might not work. Let us know.

@Call_Me_Jay didn’t work :( The troubleshooter couldn’t find any error.

Did you run Disk Cleaner ?

Have checked to make sure you have enough memory and your processor meets the requirements for running Windows 10?

Update: it suddenly worked again last night! After some tweaking I figured out that it was actually running, just a bit too slow. The culprit was probably a cumulative update that had been reported to refuse to install automatically. I’m downloading the update file to install it manually to see what happens.

Great news, I’ve had creepingly SLOW updates. Now I have a Mac for the last seven years.
