What does it mean when you hear someone whisper in your ear?

Asked by LazyMe10 (515points) November 26th, 2016

Hello. So I’ve been curious about this cause it literally happened to me about, I’d say, 15mins ago. No one was home, I turned off most of the lights in the house & in my room, still somewhatly bright out (basically the sun almost down so it looked a cool dark blue), my neighbors were finally quiet. An I was just laying in my bed, trying to take a breather, an right when I was about to close my eyes someone whispered my name.

In my right ear. No on is home but me. It sounded like a child’s voice whispering my name.

Do you think I was hearing stuff? Or could someone from the after life be trying to get in touch with me?

Tell me what you think below & if you’ve ever experienced this.

(I did look at other sources: some say it’s nothing, some say it deals with the subconscious, some say lack of sleep (but I don’t have any right now), and then on a spiritual level some say it could be something good (guardian or angel) or something bad (a succubus)

Since you seem to want some supernatural stuff I would go with your brain giving you what you want.

But you can totally hear things that aren’t there. I wake up to banging on my door and my mom screaming for help. I don’t live with my mom. This is why I have to sleep with the tv on.

@johnpowell wow really? It’s already enough I talk to myself. An now I’m hearing stuff, well it wouldn’t be the first time. It’s been awhile though since I’ve heard voices though. Thanks for the reply.

I grew up in a house with a drunk dad that liked to beat up people when he got home. So we were were trained to sleep with our clothes and shoes on (I still do this 30 years later) so we could quickly escape. 30 years later I still wake up do my mom banging on the door screaming and telling us to get in the car. Even though I live alone….

When I was growing up, that happened to me a lot more than it happens now. To ease my fears, my great grandma would tell me that my guardian angel is trying to get my attention, as there is something I will soon have to deal with, and to make sure I am paying attention to everything around me.

I sometimes hear someone calling my name. I don’t pay any attention to it, probably a mishear.

Yeah. It’s “normal.” Or we’re all crazy . Take your pick.

I suspect that if you were “just about to close your eyes”, then you were on the edge of sleeping and dreaming, anyway. And if you are already in the habit of talking to yourself, then that could play into it, too.

I’d say that there’s no harm in believing in the supernatural, to an extent. That is, no harm in believing in that until you start making important decisions with that as your primary motivation or “reason”.

@johnpowell I’m sorry that you still have to do that after all this time :(

@Escha my guardian trying to tell me something…hmmm…hopefully something life changing happens to me. I do need my life to be a bit more interesting instead one big roller coaster ride of stress, annoyance, & a shit ton of problems

You can develop your sense of what these things are by practicing paying attention to them.

When just about to fall asleep, I often start to experience dreamlike content before I am entirely asleep. It can be a bit like being partly in two realities at once.

On the other hand, there are also extra-sensory perceptions that may be something else, and some people who study dreams say that dream content too can be from a variety of sources.
