In North Dallas there was just a really loud alarm...

Asked by xxporkxsodaxx (1398points) August 6th, 2008

and I have no clue what it was for, I have seen tall poles with 4 horns in every direction but I never knew what they were for so I’m gunna take a guess and say those were the things that were making the sound. Any ideas at what they were sounding them for?

They were either testing the siren (they are probably air-raid sirens, or ‘disaster’ sirens), which they do periodically. Or, there is severe weather heading your way. Although, I just looked at your radar, and you look good, weather wise.

In San Francisco they test the warning sirens every day at exactly noon. One of these days, we might just feel the BIG ONE…

The City’s outdoor weather warning system has 94 sirens that alert people who are outdoors to seek shelter in the event of a tornado. The system is tested on the first Wednesday of every month at 12:00 noon weather permitting. We do not test the sirens if the weather is bad or threatening; this helps to ensure that there will be no confusion as to whether it is a test or a real alert.
