I am not on Jelly. I looked at it and I think it’s boring and a much lesser site than Fluther.

Coloma's avatar

I’m with @chyna and resent we are being solicited by them. They are an undeveloped nation with limited and primitive members. lol

It’s a mobile app created by Ben (co-founder of Fluther) and Biz Stone (co-founder of Twitter). The promotional stuff comes from the fact that Ben owns Fluther, can do what he wants with it, and has chosen to place various Jelly promotions on Fluther. Jelly is not a replacement for Fluther, however, and Ben has assured us that he has no plans to shut down this site (and that he will give us plenty of warning if he ever changes his mind). My understanding is that Jelly is supposed to be a kind of sister site to Fluther. It is what’s making Ben money right now, though, so it’s not terribly surprising to see ads for it here. In any case, I am not on Jelly. And if you have not deliberately signed up for it, then neither are you. There is no automatic importing of accounts from one site to the other.

Why all the promotional stuff on Fluther?

Given all the promotion here, I’d guess Jelly isn’t taking off as had been hoped.

Is it the eventual replacement for Fluther?

Apparently not (see @SavoirFaire‘s post).

What is it’s relationship to Fluther at this moment?

Same owners.

I barely have time for this site, much less another. So I haven’t investigated it.
Are all you folks also on Jelly?

No. I looked and didn’t see anything to inspire me.

Am I and I don’t know it?

Not unless you signed up in your sleep.

Looked at it a few times. Boring! No thank you.

nutallergy's avatar

We are lucky this site is alive thanks to Ben. I see nothing wrong with him promoting his other work here.

BellaB's avatar

I found this interesting as I didn’t know much about the relationships between fluther/twitter and jelly.

Explains the regular twitter push to get new questions.

@nutallergy, actually it’s a two way street. There would be no Fluther, and would never have been without the many loyal users. People who have been loyal to the site for longer than me. While people are glad Fluther exists, and that Ben keeps it going, we’re allowed to say when we don’t like something.

And while Jelly might be Ben’s future, a number of people here have made it clear it doesn’t appeal to them. If the promotion was across both sites people would feel less irritated. As it is, it feels like the other site is being imposed on Fluther users and in preference to Fluther.

nutallergy's avatar

It’s all Ben in the end. He has the final say. We can be grateful or we can be an annoyance. Being grateful will keep this site alive.

I just signed up after a less than subtle attempt plastered all over Fluther’s banner headline kinda prompted me into, curious action. Probably won’t participate a great amount but I liked the way you get to pick your tooics of interest, floating bubbles & shit.

jca's avatar

@nutallergy: We are allowed to feel what we feel about Jelly. We can be simultaneously grateful for Fluther and yet annoyed with the promotion of Jelly.

The rebel in me says let’s all go to Jelly and ask lots of questions about Fluther

Coloma's avatar

I agree 100% with @jca
We are allowed our preferences and they have nothing to do with not being supportive of Ben and his endeavors.

dappled_leaves's avatar

@Stinley “The rebel in me says let’s all go to Jelly and ask lots of questions about Fluther”

Now that is a good idea.

Seek's avatar

It’s a very impersonal site. There’s no way to look up people and what questions they’ve asked, or what answers they’ve given.

Certainly makes it difficult to ascertain whether the answers you’re receiving from any given person are reliable. All you have is the ”# helpful answers given” metric, which we all know is codswallop.

flutherother's avatar

I’ve not been tempted to try Jelly. There is no particular reason to try it and I don’t like the name.

Berserker's avatar

Looked for about two seconds then left. Ever since Fluther I can’t do other q&a sites.

chyna's avatar

^ Agree. I’m a Fluther snob.

nutallergy's avatar

@jca Interesting. When people like this site but criticize the moderation everyone flips out. So we are only allowed to criticize the founders? Thanks for the memo. ~

longgone's avatar

It’s a Q and A site I get that.

Not really. It’s supposed to be a search engine. As I understand it, they’re building content and finding experts to make that more efficient at the moment.

Why all the promotional stuff on Fluther?

Because we’re the people who would be valuable to Jelly. Fluther users tend to be smart, interested in a high level of discourse, and kind. Ben knows that.

Is it the eventual replacement for Fluther?

I don’t think it’s similar enough, and the founders have repeatedly assured the mods that no such plans are being made. Incidentally, we just got moved to new servers. That came with a ton of work for Bendrew (they’re still on it). It doesn’t make sense to be questioning their desire to keep Fluther alive right now.

What is its relationship to Fluther at this moment?

We share a founder, a jellyfish logo, and a helpful atmosphere. We are also very different.

I barely have time for this site, much less another. So I haven’t investigated it. Are all you folks also on Jelly?

I’ve seen a few of us. Not everyone, for sure.

Am I and I don’t know it?

No, that’s unlikely.

Lightlyseared's avatar

In my humble opinion Jelly is a pretty boring. Most of the questions only seem to have 1 answer which when combined with the minimalist design produces a rather dull site. Plus the moderation isn’t in the same league as Fluther with numerous spelling mistakes and “txt spk”

ibstubro's avatar

I’m still reading down, but I want to say to @BellaB Did you notice that there was not a reciprocal link to Fluther?

Yay! @Stinley. You’re the jelly-fish!

Rarebear's avatar

I am on Jelly, but haven’t used it much yet.

ibstubro's avatar

Oh, I was amazed at @chyna‘s candor.

Mobile – hand held connectivity is the future of the internet at least for the time being and Ben is shmart enough to recognize this and has feathered his nest by creating Jelly that caters to this next gen connectivity that mobile users demand. The bigger question will be is if old timers here are ready for the 3D holographic version of Fluther?

LornaLove's avatar

I’ve been on Jelly a couple of days now, I quite like it!

Cruiser's avatar

@LornaLove What do you quite like about it if I can ask?

LornaLove's avatar

@Cruiser The nice part about it is, you can ask a question without getting into a heated debate about it when that wasn’t your intention. However, I agree it’s not the same as here. I still like it though :)
