Do insects prefer fizz? (Details )

Asked by MrGrimm888 (19541points) December 7th, 2016

In my neck of the woods, we do a lot of outdoor activities. Almost always involving alcohol.

If there are 5 mostly empty, fizzless beer cans , the bugs seem to go for my fresh beer. They really seem to not like the flat beer as much.

Have you noticed this?

They seem to prefer carbon dioxide, which is what the fizz is made of.

^^Correct. And that is why mosquitoes go after cigarette smokers more that non-smokers. Smokers emit higher levels of carbon dioxide.

^Yes ,but those are insects that go after blood. I suppose a fly could be attracted to blood. But ALL ‘beer liking insects’ seem to prefer fresh carbonation to old beer.

So. We’re saying that the insects are attracted to the CO2 in the fizz perhaps?

Roaches die in our beers here frequently, if the beer is outside. They don’t look for CO2 emissions.

You are making no sense.

Bedbugs:

These nasty, vicious little fuckers that are proof conclusive that God created us to torture us for his amusement spend their days hiding dormant sometimes great distances from your actual bed.

When you sleep they are attracted by the CO2 in you breath and make the long trek to your ankles where they deliver their painful, itchy bite.

Some DIY bedbug traps involve inflating a balloon where just enough CO2 molecules make their way out of said balloon and attract the bedbugs.

Wow..I had no idea bugs were attracted to Carbon Dioxide. Interesting.

K. Sober now. What I was trying to articulate was that insects that are attracted to CO2 use that to locate animals that they would bite. Insects that don’t bite animals, or hunt them to feed on them, shouldn’t be attracted to CO2.

Most insects that I get in my beer are scavenger types. Fruit flies, flies, roaches etc. If mosquitos were attracted to the beer, that would make sense. In fact, I wonder if holding a beer makes you more attractive to mosquitoes and gnats…

My opinion, through observed behavior, is that the bugs like beer. Makes sense. If there is no fresh beer, they will still land on and consume beer.

But they prefer the carbonated beer.

So. I feel like it’s not the CO2… But maybe all insects have some attraction to CO2…

LOL. That’s better.
