The name and his actions are certainly a part of my childhood. I’m glad he lived a long and healthy life.
Yeah, he was one of the great ones. I met him one night in Miami. The sharpest blue-green eyes I’ve ever seen. RIP, Senator.
Live long and prosper… That’s what he did…RIP.
My favourite quote of his: “The earth was blue, but there was no God”.
This is good one – “As I hurtled through space, one thought kept crossing my mind — every part of this rocket was supplied by the lowest bidder”...RIP John Glenn.
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth,
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds,—and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of—Wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air…
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark or even eagle flew—
And, while with silent lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
-John Gillespie Magee Jr.
“If there is one thing I’ve learned in my years on this planet, it’s that the happiest and most fulfilled people I’ve known are those who devoted themselves to something bigger and more profound than merely their own self-interest.”—John Glenn
Oh, no. A childhood hero, as I grew up worshipping astronauts. Rest in peace, sir.
A name from my childhood. If seems wrong that astronauts should grow old and die.
The final launch. Well he had one hell of an orbit. RIP J.G.
