Supposed to dip into towards a balmy minus 17 F here tomorrow night in the Chicago area. Is Mr. Frosty pounding on your door as well? For the record 8” thick ice on open water is unheard of this time of year…

It is 24º here.. And your first tag is stupid.
If you don’t know how the climate works you shouldn’t talk about it unless you are asking a question.
Happy winter to you too, I hope the lady Winter comes here in Europe as well soon. It’s -2 Celsius, but still no snow. It will come for the New Year, I hope.
Not frozen here, just so full it could cause a massive flood in every minute. I wish I had your frozen water, much better than having to get wet.
How’s your Christmas?
I’m at 63N and it’s 2C. (35.6F) 17 Dec. We’ve had a bit of snow, but it’s all melted. Then we had rain, and that froze, so this past week we all slipped and slid on a sheet of ice on the ground and now it’s melting again. (and I got sent home from work yesterday with a fever and stomach cramps and had 18 hours of sheer hell feeling like my innards were liquefying while burning. Better today, so making soap and sipping water to re-hydrate and sore stomach muscles from all the cramping. Bright side? Free stomach muscle toning?) Oh, also, my step son’s mother phoned in tears saying that her oldest son and his girlfriend (not my step son but still has always been part of my family) won’t be attending Christmas because they’ve had a falling out. She’s devastated.
It was in the teens Fahrenheit here (southern NY) on Thursday and Friday. Today Saturday morning it’s snowing. I have shopping to do. There’s a party tonight where I live and I need snack foods for the table, and I need to get my daughter a gift from Santa to be given to her at the party. Snow is supposed to end later on in morning and then I’m going out.
I’m pretty much where @jca is weather-wise. Been icy cold for two days and snow on the ground this morning.
@jca @janbb you two are so lucky. I can’t wait till it snows here.
@Sneki95 For me, snow is fun or not depending on how much I have to go out and drive in it. this should be gone soon with the rain that is coming later. But i do love to be cozy at home, baking and reading when I don’t have to drive in it.
I always say snow is wonderful when you don’t have to drive in it.
I’d love to spend the day home relaxing or organizing stuff or decorating but unfortunately, the stress of the holidays means I have to go out. I just saw the road I’d be taking on the news. It was snowy but cars were moving. I am debating whether or not to chance it, but I think I’ll have another cup of coffee and then try to go out around 11.
The whole winter season means snow on a work day and then the stress of “do I go, do I not go, do I go later, if I wait too long I may as well not go at all.”
@jca Since I work at a commuter college it is often closed when the roads are bad but still there is stress. Around here things are supposed to warm up so I’m delaying my errands for a while.
@janbb and @jca, I’m in the same band as you guys and we’ve got about 4+ inches at my house, still coming down hard. It’s very pretty, but going to rain soon and destroy the universe. Not looking forward to that. Ugh.
@canidmajor It’s beginning to look like a mushy mess out there right now.
It was 9 degrees yesterday and no snow. Right now it is 49 degrees, raining and supposed to get up to 60 degrees today. Crazy weather! I’m glad I don’t live near Chicago @Cruiser. Brr.
The doggies, however, are seriously thrilled. :-D
@janbb: Stressful too when it’s a weekend and there’s something to do (party, wedding, trip) and there’s snow. It’s for that reason that I try not to schedule flights between January and March. I don’t want to be one of those people on the news, sleeping at the airport for three days because I can’t get out.
I hope it’s not going to be a bad winter, but so far it’s snowed about three times and it’s not even Christmas. Some years we’ve had no snow at this point.
@johnpowell You get the gold star for recognizing stupid, it was late and I should have put climate change instead…avoid running with scissors the rest of the day~
Last two days were in the teens Fahrenheit in Boston but VERY windy, so the windchill was below zero. Going into work yesterday (my commute includes about 20 minutes of walking) I wore two scarves, one the normal way and one over my face. Unfortunately this directed my breath up behind my glasses so they fogged up and I was mostly navigating by peering through the 1cm gap between the top of my glasses and the bottom of my hat.
By the time I got to work I was so cold I was starting to feel warm so that didn’t seem healthy. Luckily that was RIGHT at the end and I was able to go inside and warm up. I have very little meat on my bones at the best of times and right now I’m some ten pounds south of my normal weight so yeah….not enjoying this weather.
It snowed a bit overnight and it’s still going strong now.
@canidmajor That link took me a few minutes to see wth it was and once I did it is waaaay Cool! +6 for that! I will send it to my meteorologist sis.
Lat 13.9ºN (50 degrees south of @cazzie), 85ºF/28ºC, scattered showers to full blown rain storms for the past 90 days.
Someone mail me some winter, please? My ac is on the fritz and it’s not fun.
@canidmajor and the rest of you all with pets: How the heck are you getting them outside to potty?
I manage to keep the doors clear enough to get them out, but it’s icky frenzy wet gunk now, so getting them dry is no picnic. Ugh.
@Seek PM me your address and I will be glad to overnight a small arsenal of snowballs in time for Christmas.
I am in the San Francisco Bay Area, and it was 27 F this morning. We are not supposed to get that cold. But I can’t complain. Last weekend I was in Chicago during a snowstorm; my daughter left Boston yesterday with a windchill down to minus 20 F.
It’s cold here, very cold. Ever since Wednesday it’s been from -20 to -35. For two weeks it’s been snowing, and right now outside my window it’s snowing like a mad cannibal. I love Winter so this is an excellent start. I can hear plows all over the place haha. I think thee’s more snow right now tham we got all Winter last year.
Was reading something about a polar vortex happening this year, promising Canada a frigid Winter. Believe it or not, we don’t always have Viking style Winters. So far, this is the coldest one I can remember in the last four years, and with the most snow. Of course there’s much time for this to change. It could get warm and everything could melt. But I hope not. Lots of snow, I want it to stay, it’s not Mr. Frosty that’s knocking at my door…it’s those snowmen monsters that come after Calvin.
No sign of winter here as yet but we may get a touch of frost over the weekend.
It’s 49 degrees right now, not a cloud in the sky, and not a breath of wind. I have several chores I’ve put off to the weekend but I’m debating on whether to play golf instead. Chores or golf, chores or golf. I fear the chores may lose this battle.
^^bastard^^ Do go golf… chores can wait for when it is dark out.
Last night the low was 35 degrees; for around here, that’s very cold. Highs in the low 50s all week. I hate the winter. Cannot wait until it gets warmer.
Everybody is entitled to bitch about record cold temperatures….but @DominicY 35 degrees??? seriouslY? JK Cold is cold no matter what you are used to. PM me your address and I will send you a nice arsenal of snowballs.
I’m a Californian; once it gets below 65 I start to freak out :P
did you mean Ouzo If so, I am willing to give it a “shot”.
It was below freezing last night it is suppose to hit 71 °F tomorrow.
@Tropical_Willie That is a monster swing of temperature uncertainty…at least here I know it will be cold cold and have little choice in the matter. You on the other hand have the arduous task of deciding…shorts…pants…hoodie….tank top…sandals….Tommy Bahama….shoes…jacket…sweater…biff shorts….Speedo…waaay to complicated for me to be honest. Tropical weather is too confusing!~
No North Carolina real moist.
The city had sand trucks out after midnight last night; sanding slippery spots like bridges, there was fog and drizzle too.
We were down in the teens and twenties the past two days and are supposed to be up in the 60s tomorrow!
@janbb I will then live vicariously through you as our high tomorrow is supposed to reach a balmy minus 4 F (-4F) Watch the Bears game tomorrow to see limbs shatter from torsos when they are tackled. Supposed to be the coldest NFL game ever played.
We’re supposed to get more rain and wind with the warmer weather but still good.
The weather is crazy here. 35 last night. 70 today….It changes from “cold” to temperate, and back and forth until it gets hot again in the spring….
This type of temperature change often results in crusty scabs in my beard, and lots of people getting sick.
I love Charleston, but I hate the weather.
Today it’s 85Fwith 57% humidity. So it’s much cooler than it has been, but it’s sticky.
Christmas Day is forecast to be 78F.
Here you go @Cruiser. This shows the temperatures and averages for July 2016.
I should say where we are is always a couple of degrees centigrade higher than Brissy.
This is closer to where I am.
Not sure how accurate your source is as it usually is a heck of a lot hotter in NY in July than 2C. Even the Miami temp of 70 F in July is way off course!
No, I meant whatever that first source said for Brisbane, add at least 2 degrees centigrade to the Brisbane average. And that shows what it was and what the average is. You also have to factor in the humidity too. It’s quite humid here which means what the temperature is, and what it feels like, are two very different things.
So at the moment the temp is 88.2F but it feels like 92.2F because of the humidity etc.

In saying that, I know over last summer we had days that were into the 100s, but that’s not reflected in those tables. Not necessarily in December, but in Jan-March. Anyway, it feels hot and sticky here today and I’d rather it was snowing.
It is really cold here. There is almost a foot of snow outside and it’s about -6 F/-20C outside and that doesn’t include the windchill.
@Cruiser Was “uze” a typo, or is there a new slang word I’m once again late in getting?
@Espiritus_Corvus yuze are late for the early show….Miriam Webster officially has uze under consideration….feel honored you saw it here first. Once they are done deliberating on axs….I was told uze is next in line.
@chyna uze just ruffled a lot of northern feathers…It was all me and I accept full and total blame for my invocation of uze. Yes I did it and I am damm prowd of itt!~
Damn Yankees. Foiled again.
The English language falls down, @Espiritus_Corvus when it comes to the plural person singular. Other languages have this covered, but English, in is sad evolution, has gotten rid of the Thee, and Thine (or Thy) and Thou and Ye. Instead of saying ‘uze’, the correct English plural person singular is Ye.
Here, found a quick guide for ye: https://www.ecclesia.org/truth/thou.html
And today it’s mild as Spring but cloudy and breezy!
@cazzie Det var mycket bra av dig, i alla fall.
I think I got that right. It’s been over 25 years.
The East Coast thaws, but Northern California is deeper into the cold, 23 F in my town this morning.
Still snowing like crazy.
Yep, low 20’s here the last few days but I get flooded with morning sun to the point that I have my back door open now letting the sun in and the cool morning air. It’s nice!
I sat outside the night before last in 26 degree weather on a perfectly clear starry night and enjoyed bundling up and taking in the night sky and the reflection of the christmas lights on the pool.
Full sun enables me to sit outside on the deck and sip my coffee in 2 F with 12” of snow….I love ol man Winter! Flip of a coin as to which football team is more hard core playing in this weather…Bears or the Packers.
Looks like no white Jul this year.
That is not nice @canidmajor They will never find life on Mars if it is this cold!
That’s why they left Mars. They’re in Arizona now.
Are youse guys serious? Are they actually considering this?
OK. I surrender. At my age, resistance to change is not a good thing. So,
I suppose we could use a plural second person personal pronoun, but “uze” looks really ugly to me. I’ve never actually heard anyone use the word in a serious way, maybe once or twice when someone has had too much to drink and launched into a Joe Pesci monologue from Good Fellas.
I’ve seen the word in film and stage manuscripts—in Eugene O’Neill’s characters’ dialogues set in the dives along any given waterfront, in the manuscript for the film Chinatown where the truck driver/client in the beginning of the film uses the word, and in the script for the stage version of Hatful of Rain in the role of Mother, a 1940’s heroin dealer.
It is spelled “youse” in those manuscripts, as I remember. Correct me if I’m wrong, Penguin. I prefer that spelling as it shows the relationship to “you” and looks more, I dunno, English than “uze”. I hope they adapt “youse” as the plural form of “you.” “Uze” just looks too much like “uzi” to me.
I mean, c’mon. Who can argue with masters of the language like Eugene O’Neill and Robert Towne?
I vote for “youse”, youse guys!
Obviously an intellectual argument.
@Espiritus_Corvus Yeah – I had never seen “uze” before either, just figured @Cruiser was making a joke and I sounded it out. I would go with “youse” guys normally if I were a gangster from Brooklyn.
Yeah, I hope Cruiser was joking, too.
Ya’ll always worked fine when I was a kid. But, you know, those damn Yankees…
“You guys” is my Yankee alternative. Said to sons and daughters-in-law alike.
youse
pronoun, \(¦)yüz,yəz,-yəs, (¦)yüs\
Definition of youse:
(substandard)
You — usually used in addressing two or more persons or sometimes one person as representing also another or others (the two of youse, the rest of youse)
—Miriam Webster Online, youse
Wow. One call and bang, I got my spelling and it was on the net before I hung up the phone. See what a little assertive persuasion can do?
Hey, youse guys ever need anything, just ask the ol’ skipper.
@Espiritus_Corvus…near fatal error…you used the word serious to review something I wrote in obvious goof mode. Plus I have a very debilitating wrist injury that motivates me to type as little as I can get away with.
@Jaxk Thanks for sharing that! Needed a good laugh. Brings back good memories of a golf outing my college buddies and I had every first week of December we called the Orange Ball Classic. There were years it was so cold that if you were able to actually get the tee in the ground the other golfers begged you to leave it after your tee shot. The water hazards were decorated with dozens of orange balls and despite the copious amounts of beer and schnaps we drank, no one was that snookered to venture out on the ice. I still have to say poor guy as I know what it feels like to crash through the ice like that…brrrrr.
Glad you enjoyed it. Unfortunately I could see myself doing that in my younger, anything to save a stroke, days.
