Should I be able to use my iPhone 5S with Verizon?

Asked by JLeslie (65743points) December 29th, 2016 from iPhone

I originally had it with Sprint. Sprint has unlocked it.

I called apple and they said it should work. Verizon is saying it won’t.

An iPhone 5S still works with Verizon, but Verizon may not allow it to be ported to them. After all, they are in the phone selling business, and iPhone 5S is no longer available via Verizon.

I have one, and it’s Verizon.

I just called Apple again and they said it won’t work. I had called a day or two ago and that person said it would work.

I’m so sick of it. For ten years I’ve bitched about how the cell networks in America are disgusting keeping it so you can only use certain phones with certain carriers. From what I understand the government made sure that didn’t happen in most European countries. Now it’s better in America, but still garbage to deal with.

From this article I think a Sprint phone is the model least compatible with other networks and will not work on Verizon:

(Switching carriers? You may be able to take your iPhone 5S with you)

But you could walk into a Verizon store and ask for sure.

Personally I would eBay the Sprint phone and buy a Verizon version. If you get another 5S, your net cost would easily be less than $100, maybe less than $50.

Verizon uses different frequencies than Sprint (some are the same but more Verizon towers use Verizon only frequencies) . Ten years ago “roam” on Verizon meant you were on Sprint tower.

I agree Ebay the old phone.
