Do you use a slow cooker (aka "crock pot") and if so, what do you make with it?

Asked by jca (36062points) January 2nd, 2017

I have two slow cookers but haven’t used them in years.

I’m thinking I should start. Beef stew is one thing my grandmother made and my mom made (both used cast iron pots, not slow cookers). I’d like to try some beef stew or pot roast.

What do you make with your slow cooker?

The BEST food comes out of slow cookers. I make a fantastic pot roast, with carrots, potatoes, tomatoes and onions.
I also make a killer onion soup in the crock pot.

Throw in a chuck roast.
Add in this order:
Two tablespoons of garlic
Three tablespoons of Montreal Seasoning
Two tablespoons of Herbs de Province
One teaspoon of paprika
Baby carrots
Chopped in quarters peeled potatoes
Chopped in quarters peeled onions
One cup of water
cook on low all day.

I put in the roast on a bed of cut onions. I cook it on high until it starts simmering, and then I turn it to low. After about 3 hours I add beef broth and / or beef bullion cubes. Then I ad my veggies. That evening I’ll put it in the fridge and put it back on the next day. It gets nothing but better over time.

I love my programmable model. My favorite overnight-cooked dishes are corned beef and cabbage, Swiss steak, and beef stew.

Disappointment.

I use the slow cooker regularly. You definitely need to be careful about getting the liquid balance right when cooking meat- I’ve noticed that a lot of people add too much and their food ends up flavourless.

I was at a church Christmas event and it seemed everything (other than cookies and salad) was in a slow cooker. Stew, soup, meatballs, chicken, pasta dishes, rice, potatoes, apple cider, mulled wine. It was quite a sight. I wondered if they’d made it a theme or something.

….

everything I tried was delicious

Yesterday a friend served succotash she’d prepared in the slow cooker. My root vegetable mash for the same meal was kept warm in a slow cooker til serving time. Similarly, the turkey was kept warm in a giant slow cooker after I’d cut it up for serving.

People seem to either real like their slow cookers/crockpots or never get the hang of it.

Beef ribs. Over cooked them and didn’t have sauce.

Try something else that doesn’t require sauce and almost literally can’t be over cooked. Like pot roast.

I don’t use mine often, but I like mine for soups. Like white chicken chili, clam chowder, and chicken meals. There a lots of crock pot recipes online.

Vegetable stews. Mostly I use recipe books. Two dishes that are particularly good are artichoke lasagna and what they called vegetarian paella.

All kinds of soups, chili, spaghetti sauce, spicy Andouille sausage & veggies served over pasta. Split pea soup, I love my crock pot, I use it a couple times a week all winter long.
