Can you help me with a Dropbox question?

Asked by JLeslie (65790points) January 4th, 2017 from iPhone

The company I work for uses Dropbox, and I still don’t really understand it. I just bought a new computer and need to access the Dropbox documents. I logged into Dropbox, I see the folders, but when I click on a document it doesn’t open.

I think when I first started using Dropbox back when I was hired I actually downloaded the folders. Then I was able to see all the documents in my folders. Is that right?

If I can just view online I prefer it. If I need to download the folders how the hell do I do it?

I’m so frustrated.

Thanks ahead of time.

is it possible it isn’t recognizing your new computer as having an account and you have to establish your account again. That would be my first guess.

^^I don’t know? I logged in. I can see all the folders.

It recognizes me.

I have a little folder icon at the bottom of my screen if I want to get to my documents. In the old computer my Dropbox is in there. Right now, in the new computer it isn’t.

I use Dropbox, but I haven’t come across this problem. Are the folders you can see shared with you? In other words, do you need to be granted access to those folders? I don’t have an ‘organisation’ account, only my own, so I share folders with people and they with me. I can’t see their other folders.

I can’t figure out how to upload folders rather that individual items. I have folders of photographs I want to upload and end up with them all lose under Photos. I don’t want to have to re-sort them all into folders in Dropbox. So I’m obviously not an expert with the program.

Yeah – I have it too but don’t really use it. This may be an obvious question but are you double clicking on the docs you want to open. I just went into mine and docs were opening.

I’ll make sure I’m double clicking. I’m not sure if I did.

Yes, the folders are shared with me, I see them in my other computer no problem.

Do you have the latest version? Is there an upgrade you need to download?

Have you tried a different browser? You would be amazed how often this works for me.

Do you look at your Dropbox online? Or, does it show in your folders?

janbb's avatar

It’s on my hard drive.

JLeslie's avatar

@janbb How did you get it there?

I only use the online version. I only turn it on to upload or download something. I don’t want it to sync with my computer(s). One of the reasons I use it is to archive stuff because I run out of space on my hard drive (and external drives). If I download the desktop version, it takes up space I’m trying to free up. I also want to be able to access things overseas when I may not have that laptop.

It was quite a while ago and as I said I don’t use it. Someone was planning to share files with me on it and I think they sent me an invite to download it which I did. One thing that I find really anooying is that is seems to feel it is the default for backing up files that I don’t really want there and keeps telling me that I have run out of space and can buy more. I am thinking of deleting it but am unsure.

Crap. I might go into Staples and ask one of the guys there to help me. I hate all this computer stuff.

You could also use Google. When I have problems with a program, that’s what I do and often someone else has had the same issue and there’s a solution available. Good luck with it anyway @JL.

Open them the same way you would any other file on your computer. The files are on your computer, Dropbox merely does syncing to keep them up to date with the remote copy on their server.

JLeslie's avatar

@Mariah That’s what I do on my old computer. Do I need to download them onto my new computer?

Mariah's avatar

When you install Dropbox they should download automatically and you should be able to continue as normal.

Maybe I’m not “installing” it? How do I do that?

Try installing the latest version of Dropbox Desktop here

In reference to @Earthbound_Misfit‘s first post: Your company may have overlooked giving you authorization to open these files.

Also, you may not be allowed access from an off-site computer as a security measure—that is the way it often is when you work with proprietary info and and is nearly always the case with the Federal government.

This authorization is given by your computer administrator, your company IT guy. S/he pulls a switch after getting authorization from your department head and, voila, you have accesss. This may be just a matter of going to your boss or directly to your IT person.

Just a shot in the dark: Don’t these folders come in compressed? If so, your new computer may be lacking decompression software. I would go to your IT person and ask what decompression software is best used for your company’s purposes.

A PM to johnpowel might be fruitfull.

Duplication eliminated.

I already have the access. I have it on my other computer. Both computers are at my home.

I finally figured it out with the help of my boss. I needed to download/install Dropbox (I think @Mariah and @flutherother had mentioned this) and then finally it all synced up.
