Can you use your last paycheck of the year to file your income taxes in lieu of a W2?

Asked by Dutchess_III (47127points) January 5th, 2017

As asked. My daughter was told by someone at work that we can. Thought I’d check with the experts.

Usually not. It depends on how detailed the paycheck stub is and if you have factors like:

- pretax (flex) accounts for various reasons
– 401K contributions

Put it this way – the numbers will be fairly close, but not the same as a W2. I would wait.

I wouldn’t. Why does she want to do that?

So she can file NOW.

Go stand in a corner with your nose to the wall @Naughtygal. 10 minutes.

Your daughter will receive the tax documents from her employer by law by the end of January, which is a bit more than 3 weeks away. She is desperate for money now?

Also, let’s not encourage the child.

I think it’s just something she heard, and wanted to verify. But yeah, she’s desperate for the money.

Also, if she could file now she’d miss the crush and get her refund really, really quickly.

@Dutchess_III: Maybe not. IRS might not have the staff until after last day of January. Someone in my family is a CPA, and he’s on vacation right now. He knows from decades of doing accounting that the busy season is Feb-April. January is still nirvana time.

OK. If you say so.
