Go as late as 1980 if you want. And remember, songs from 1977 and before were still played in 1978, I am on a nostalgia binge. January 1978 to January or February 1979. What songs come to mind when you think that timeframe?
What else do you remember about this era?

“My Sharona” only because I met someone with a similar name that ran a liquor store with a great selection of liquors.
Bee Gee songs come to mind. Their disco dancing songs.
Staying Alive, How Deep is Your Love, Night Fever.
Andy Gibb Shadow Dancing.
You’re deep in disco territory!
I agree with @chyna, the Bee Gees and Stayin’ Alive, How deep is your love, Boney M were big too. They had a number of hits during this period – The Rivers of Babylon, Rasputin. Eruption’s I can’t stand the rain. This was also the era of Grease! You’re the one that I want .. oooh oooh ohh…and Summer Nights.
Other really popular songs were Mull of Kintyre and With a little love by Wings, Gerry Rafferty’s Baker Street (I loved that one), Kate Bush, Wuthering, wuthering heights—heathcliff!!! Blondie and Denis. The Commodores, you’re once, twice, three times a ladyyyyyyy….Justin Hayward’s Forever Autumn (theme from War of the Worlds), Rod Stewart – Hot lips. And another favourite of mine, Bill Withers – Lovely Day.
There are so many great hits from this period and so many truly, truly awful songs. I’ve listed good and bad examples here.
It’s a Heartache- Bonnie Tyler.
Gonna Move- Les Dudek.
I’ll be Waiting- Santuna
Cocaine- Eric Clapton
If I Can’t Have You- Yvonne Elliman
Baker Street- Gerry Rafferty
Dust in the Wind- Kansas
Slip Slidin’ Away- Paul Simon
Running on Empty- Jackson Brown
When I think of when I was 18 I was on music overdrive and these 2 songs dominate the memory banks…I also remember coming of age and driving my ‘68 Camaro to college.
Baker Street
Runnin with the Devil
Some great music there @Brian1946. You have great taste in music. I wouldn’t mind sitting on the floor listening to records with you – I’ll bring the wine.
I just read @Brian1946 post and he is the only other webbie I have crossed paths with who knew of Les Dudek…hat tip.
City Magic
I remember Linda Ronstadt being popular. Saturday Night Fever. Hip Hop was starting to become popular (Sugar Hill Gang, etc.). I think this was the era of Rod Stewart Do Ya Think I’m Sexy. Classic disco like Sylvester, Donna Summer, KC and the Sunshine Band. Fleetwood Mac, KISS, 10cc, Ramones. Boston. Meatloaf.
I know I’m all over the place. My taste in music is very varied.
1979, 1980 – Van Halen, Talking Heads, Tom Petty Dam the Torpedoes, Devo, Michael Jackson Off the Wall, Pat Benatar, Depeche Mode “New Dress” and “Flies on the Windscreen.”

Yet that one, of all the Ramones’ songs, is not one of their best.
jca’s mention of Pat Benatar reminded me (not that it counts toward anything) that I worked with her father, Andy Andrzejewski in the 80s, when I lived in New York (that’s right….growing up, she was just little Patty Andrzejewski).
One day, she called her father and said, “Dad, why are you still working ? Come out here to California. I’ll buy you a house, and you can sleep-in and relax every day”.
And that was it.
Two weeks later, nice-guy Andy was…....GONE…...
A great C&W tune from about ‘76 – Five Dollars in the Jukebox, Eddie Rabbit
@jca
“I saw Triumph in concert.”
