When naming your children, what names didn't make the cut?

Asked by Hawaii_Jake (37748points) February 1st, 2017

Or, if you don’t have children, what name would you not choose?

For our first daughter, we thought of Emma, but chose something else.

Believe it or not, Templeton is an old name in my family. My wife mentioned it when we were expecting our son, but I just kind of raised my eyebrows.

My second child was either going to be called Rachel or Megan. Then I heard a song that mentioned a name and I liked it.

I also always thought I’d use my mother’s maiden name and my father’s first name if I ever had a son. However, when he was born those names just did not suit him. I looked down at his little face and knew they weren’t right for him.

Ian’s name was originally going to be Ethan, but it landed on the top 10 list of baby names from the previous year. Hubby hated growing up being one of a bazillion Jasons in the class, so we landed on Ian (which was in the 700s). His middle name was set from the beginning: the name of a favorite uncle.

Had Ian been a girl, the top name was Morgan Igraine.

@Hawaii_Jake I’m glad you didn’t name your son Templeton. Sounds too much like simpleton.

Templeton is the rat in Charlotte’s Web.

I found out early on I was going to have a boy. His name had to fit both of our cultures and be easily pronounced by my English speaking side. Also, we didn’t want him to be one of three or four in his class called by the same name. We thought about but discarded, Mathias and Magnus. We kept Theodore or Oskar. One of those two made the cut…. especially when he came out being a ‘star gazer’.

YES, @Seek That is exactly what I thought when I heard Templeton.

Nicole, Aida, because I liked it. Desiree (I knew a girl in high school who was tough on the out side but actually very sweet on the inside to those who bothered to know her and she was very smart but that was something else people didnt know).

Manuel. Knew a guy who loved his mom to pieces. He was a great son. Thought one day I would name my boy that. But that name didn’t go well with his last name.

Also my husband didn’t like any of those names. So for my son, I picked his first name and my mom decided the middle name and for our daughter, my husband chose one of my picks for first names and I decided the middle name.

I wanted to name our daughter “Corinna”. My wife liked it, but wanted it spelled with a ‘K’ instead. I said no, because Ks are evil — so we skipped it.

My wife wanted “Solè”. I liked it but wanted it spelled “Soleil” because I felt that folks would mispronounce Solè as sole – as in “filet of sole” of “soles of your feet.” She disagreed, so we skipped it.

My husband wanted Emil for a boy. I was so glad when we had two girls and I didn’t have to have that fight with him. (My dad, who is a bit deaf, misheard it when we were discussing it and thought it was Email. Even this didn’t convince my husband that it is a terrible name).

I liked Eric for a boy and for a girl we both liked Elodie but decided it was too fancy.

My son’s name is John David, after Lennon and my brother.
I considered Telemicus (son of Ulysses), Hunter (for H.S.Thompson), Gunnar (for actor Gunnar Bjornstrand), James (family name), and Rodan.
In the end, I decided to go with a serious vanilla name, since I had been saddled with a rather silly name.

I liked Noah and Aaron (which would have been after my brother who died) but he didn’t so we skipped them. I liked Sarah but, at that time, it wasn’t really acceptable as a boy’s name. :-)

For my second daughter I wanted Jewel-Lee Kate. The father said no to the spelling and I got Julie Kate. I soon sound out after naming her that a past girlfriend was the reason he was ok with naming her Julie. So in my head and as far as she knows she’s named after my cousin and my 3rd great grandmother.
