Sure. My mother took me to my first political event when I was 10 or 11. So I’ve got close to 50 years of protests/demonstrations/campaign events behind me. I don’t get as giddy about them as I once did. I try to only go to ones that feel positive, that I can be enthusiastic about. If it feels like a chore I don’t go. I’ve done my time.
I did. It was a riot, actually. It didn’t start out as a protest. It started out a a few hundred young people at a park for a music event, and the police turned it ugly. It was HOURS before I could get out.
We started a signature drive for something in Jr. High. I forget what it was.
Yes, in junior high school. I think we were protesting the Vietnam war. I’m pretty sure it was over by that point, but we wanted to get in on the marches.
Yes.
Various, of various sorts.
I’ve seen a student protest once, but I got too lazy and careless to participate. I didn’t even agree with their reasons to protest anyways.
I’ve also seen some demonstrations, that gave me a strong aversion to any demonstration ever.
I protested the Vietnam war when I was at UC Berkeley in 1965.
I demonstrated against Bush Sr’s invasion of Iraq in 1991.
Yes. Not as often as I should have. There have been many protests I’ve felt strongly about but I’ve had other things on (or made the mental excuse I’ve had other things on).
For the union I’m in, many rallies, demonstrations and helping other unions on the picket line.
I participated with a sit in once. We gained our objective right away and the reporters went away bummed by the peaceful resolution.
Back around 1998 there was a protest in Eugene. Shit got crazy and there was a Taco Bell on 7th that got some good damage.
So I wake up to my sister the next day (I was living with her at the time) about how my picture was on the front page of the newspaper. She just got a call about how her brother was page one. I was in front of a Taco Bell lobbing rocks at cops.
This could have been me. I agreed with the message. But, I might have been at work.
But I will own this. When Bush started the Iraq war we went into the middle of I-5 to stop traffic in Portland. Major path of commerce stopped for hours. We knew the war would rage on but at least we tried while you watched Survivor.
Yes. I would participate in more, but I’m poor and work all the time. I can’t just fly to D.C….
I marched to protest the Vietnam War and the bombing of Cambodia in 1970.
Today, as a matter of fact.
