Wouldn't the government not issue security clearance to Trump if his taxes showed a problem with Russia?

Asked by JLeslie (65719points) February 17th, 2017 from iPhone

I heard some people saying we need to see Trump’s taxes, because the taxes could reveal business with Russia.

I know the public hasn’t been shown Trump’s taxes, but the IRS still has the taxes. Wouldn’t security clearance for a president include looking over his taxes if that was a concern?

Not necessarily. It would also show all the international connections (China, Saudi Arabia, Columbia . . . )
I’m not sure he has a clearance ~ ~

The president doesn’t have a clearance?

@JLeslie…you are honestly observant…don’t ever change.

The government doesn’t issue security clearance to the president. The president automatically has the highest security clearance there is. The only way for that to chance is for him to be removed from office and that is up to the Congress.

Interesting. I googled up this:

“Security clearances are not mandated for the President, Vice President, Members of Congress, Supreme Court Justices, or other constitutional officers…The criteria for election or appointment to these positions are specified in the U.S. Constitution, and except by constitutional amendment, no additional criteria (e.g., holding a security clearance) may be required”

@Call_Me_Jay Well that explains a lot.

The problem is not a legal matter but a concern that large investment in Russia or heavy indebtedness to it may affect his political actions.

Anyone can run for president if they meet the requirements of the Constitution.

This means the candidate can be a convicted felon, psychotic, a drug addict, have publicly accepted bribes, be in prison, a wife beater, a child molester, a known terrorist, a racist etc. It is up to the voters to decide if a candidate is suitable.

Trump is obviously keen that the voters should not see his tax returns. Every major party candidate since Richard Nixon in 1972 has made their returns public before Election Day. Why is Trump holding out? I don’t think it is to do with Russia, but I would like to know what it is. I am surprised American voters and taxpayers are letting him off the hook on this.

Whoa, slow down there.

I’ve never seen much evidence Trump is a drug addict. And he’s not a felon or in prison.

Wow. Thanks for the links and looking this topic up. It’s stunning to me the president isn’t vetted in some way regarding security clearance. Seems like that is a flaw in the system.

@Call_Me_Jay The standards have been in decline recently.

I don’t think that was ever stated specifically about Trump. @flutherother was indicating that that’s really how low the bar could conceivably be placed.

Trump is a racist. He molests adult women. There was a case being brought against Trump for raping 13 year old. I don’t know what happened to the case. Trump is a serial liar. He has a questionable connection with Putin and various Russian agents. Nevertheless he was elected.

Darth_Algar's avatar

The woman dropped the case because she was receiving a shit ton of death threats from Trump supporters.

@LostInParadise

Show proof that Trump has an inappropriate connection to Russia.

If there was it would be all over the media, and I don’t mean seeding speculation by the likes of the New York Times.

In other words, if the media is willing to devote so much time, effort and column space to theories they would most certainly report about any and all substantiated proof to the idea.

It is worth further investigation.

@flutherother “Anyone can run for president if they meet the requirements of the Constitution.” Yep but anyone with the criteria you laid out would have to be a billionaire to even have a chance at competing in the Primaries and then get elected…..whooops….it just happened!

Tropical_Willie's avatar

The requirements (only requirement for a Republican President is be a billionaire WTF ! !)

Call_Me_Jay's avatar
